Job Description
Functions as a Certified Surgical Technologist in the operating room/procedure room under the direction of the Registered Nurse. The Certified surgical technologist collaborates with other team members of the healthcare delivery team, to include physicians, to deliver quality, safe, and efficient health care. The surgical technologist possesses expertise in the theory and application of aseptic technique, in combination with knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures and implementation tools and technologies, to facilitate the physician's performance of surgical procedures.
- Prepares the operating room and sterile field for surgical procedures, including setting up surgical supplies, instruments and equipment using sterile technique and ensuring that surgical equipment is functioning properly and safely.
- Assists in moving and positioning patient for surgery, adheres to established safety guidelines.
- Properly cares for, and handles specimens taken for laboratory analysis.
Minimum Qualifications
For Appointment to Level I
1. Documented designation of Grandfathered status as a Surgical Technologist; or
2. Completion of an appropriate training program for Surgical Technologists in the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard or Public Health Service Commissioned Corps; or
3. Service in the federal government to the extent that the individual performed duties related to the practice of Surgical Technology.
For Appointment to Level II
1. Hold and maintain a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting.
Note: Effective January 1, 2015, all newly hired incumbents to the title of Surgical Technologist must hold and maintain a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential and be assigned at Level II. In addition, any employee who functions as a Surgical Technologist will be required to annually complete fifteen (15) hours of continuing education in order to remain qualified to perform the functions of a Surgical Technologist at an HHC facility.
Department Preferences
- Graduate of a recognized and accredited Certified Surgical Technologist Program
- NBST Certification
- High School Diploma or GED Required
- Current BLS certification.
- Must annually complete 15 hours of continuing education to remain qualified to practice as a surgical technologist.
- Minimum 2 years previous experience in either a hospital or ambulatory surgical center setting preferred.
- Demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Excellent knowledge of aseptic and sterile technique.
- Ability to tolerate prolonged periods of standing and walking.
- Ability to perform lifting and transporting of patients; and lifting of instrument trays and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision and to organize work in order of importance.
- Ability to work effectively in stressful situations and in a variety of peri-operative environments.
