Primary Purpose:
Support district school health program and provide direct services to medically complex students, including tracheostomy care, enteral feedings, and other nursing services as needed for students in order to promote the optimum health of each student and to positively impact attendance and student achievement.

Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid Texas Vocational Nurse license issued by the Board of Vocational Nurse Examiners with copy of current license on file in the Human Resources Department.
  • Current Certification for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (CPR and AED)
  • Valid certification to conduct vision/hearing/spinal screening.

Special Knowledge/Skills:
  • Practical working knowledge of nursing procedures, techniques, and practices
  • Strong organizational, communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills
  • Strong computer skills and ability to quickly adapt to new software applications
  • Ability to collaborate with outside medical providers to obtain physician orders
  • Ability to work compatible with students, parents and staff
  • Ability to accept supervision and direction from campus principal and/or Registered Nurse
  • Willingness to attend workshops and training to acquire new skills as needed

Experience:
  • One to two years nursing experience with medically fragile or complex children preferred
  • Nursing experience with tracheostomy/ventilator care preferred
  • Nursing experience with school-aged children preferred

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
  1. Provide direct care utilizing physician orders, school health protocols and student specific care plans
  2. Communicate changes in student health to the parent/guardian and treating physician
  3. Administer prescribed medication and treatments to students, complying with the physician's orders, parental consent, and in accordance with District policies and procedures
  4. Document all care rendered in the electronic health record daily
  5. In the absence of the RN, provide emergency care for the ill and injured, using first aid procedures and obtain necessary assistance in case of serious trauma and/or illness.
  6. Advise the RN of any communicable diseases (exclusion and re-admission) so the RN can notify the health department on all reportable diseases.
  7. Provide documentation and maintain current skills for CPR/AED and Vision/Hearing/Spinal screening.
  8. Assist the RN with annual vision, hearing and spinal screening of students
  9. Follow universal precautions and proper handling techniques of all potentially hazardous materials
  10. Demonstrate integrity and ethics, and maintain absolute confidentiality
  11. Maintain a positive, professional image in appearance, communication and interactions
  12. Comply with federal, state, and District policies, as well as campus routines and regulations
  13. Maintain nursing skill and knowledge base by complying with the State of Texas Board of Nurse Examiners requirements for Nursing Continuing Professional Development in your practice area
  14. Perform other duties and accept other responsibilities assigned by the Executive Director of Special Education, principal or RN
  15. If needed, triage and provide direct care for students with routine medical needs utilizing school health protocols and care plans provided by the school nurse (RN)
Students with tracheostomies or ventilator care:
  • Assess and monitor respiratory status and overall student condition regularly
  • Perform routine, as needed, and emergent tracheostomy care, including suctioning, cleaning, replacing, and ensuring patency of the tracheostomy tube
  • Assess and manage the site for signs of infection, obstruction, or other complications
