Lab Technician

General Statement of Responsibilities: Responsible for conducting routine metallurgical tests on heat-treated bearing components, process control tests, and maintenance of legible records of their finding under the direction of the Metallurgical Laboratory Supervisor. Makes decisions on quality within the scope of their ability and call attention to supervision metallurgical quality or process quality that is not in conformance to NTN-Bower Metallurgical Standards.
Essential Duties (Other duties may be assigned as necessary)
- Sections, mounts, and prepares metallurgical samples in a fashion that will not alter the original metallurgical condition.
- Conducts Hardness and MicroHardness tests.
- Conducts Microstructure evaluations, using a light microscope.
- Logs in samples submitted to the Laboratory for Metallurgical examination and maintain proper identification of samples.
- Determines the acceptability of results of the above tests against accepted standards. Report any non-conforming results to Metallurgical Lab Supervisor for evaluation.
- Conduct carbon turnings analysis using lathe, analytical balance, and carbon analyzer.
- Dispositions "Rework" within technicians ability to judge proper "Rework" procedure. Writing up of "Rework" instructions based on current practices.
- Maintains legible records of test results according to prescribed standards and procedures.
- Operates computer-controlled lab equipment. Uses a computer to retrieve drawings standards.
- Carries out special assignments, as assigned by the Metallurgical Laboratory Supervisor.
- Maintain equipment by performing necessary PM such as changing coolants, filters, etc.
- Carries out all work with a safety first attitude. Safety is the first concern in working with equipment. Quality of workmanship is second only to safety.
- Supports the Plant quality systems goals/improvements productivity goals/improvements within the scope of the job (ISO QS 9000).
- Supports the Plant safety programs/goals within the scope of the job, including ISO 14001.
- Maintains highest level of quality in all aspects of laboratory duties.
- Regular and predictable attendance.
- Compliance to applicable Company, Corporate, State, and Federal regulations.
Education Experience:Minimum of high-school diploma or G.E.D. with at least one year's course work in chemistry or physics in addition to an emphasis in mathematics. One year certificate preferred from a college, technical school, or at-home study in a course such as the ASM Metallurgy courses; or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education or experience. Previous metallurgical experience is also preferred; however, general laboratory experience would be beneficial.
Language Math Requirements:Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees of the organization. Ability to calculate figures and amounts; as well as the ability to apply concepts such as basic algebra. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instruction furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving concrete variables in standardized situations.
Physical Demands/Work Environment:While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to acidic chemicals and synthetic machining coolant. The noise level in the work environment is variable; however it is usually moderate.
