Job Description
8:00 A.M - 8:00 P.M
SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Administers aerosol, oxygen, and diagnostic therapy.
- Maintains airway during CPR, and ensures bronchial hygiene, and airway integrity.
- Administers techniques to induce sputum.
- Assesses modalities of therapy - recommends improvement needed to doctors.
- Participates in training for peers, physicians, nurses, and other health care providers.
- Participates in CQI activities, data collection, analysis, and action.
- Coordinates and/or supervises activities of assigned personnel.
- Documents all patient care appropriately, including patient/family education.
- Cleans, assembles, tests, and calibrates all patient care equipment.
- Delivers, replaces, and monitors medical gas tanks and maintains systems.
- Replaces accessories and tubing on in-use equipment. Maintains order and cleanliness of work areas.
- Responds to all cardiorespiratory emergencies and provide respiratory care as needed.
- Maintains the inventory of respiratory equipment and supplies, and communicates needs to supervisor.
- Administers aerosolized medication nebulizer.
- Initiates, monitors, and adjusts parameters on mechanical ventilators, BiPAP, and CPAP
- Performs arterial blood gas puncture, obtains arterial samples, and interprets results.
- Administers techniques to induce sputum.
- Provides Respiratory Care therapy, equipment, and modalities to Neonatal ICUs
- Participates in resuscitation and airway management of neonatal infants.
- May participate in the evaluation of patients for home respiratory care
- Assesses respiratory therapy modalities and recommends changes and improvements appropriate to the delivery of respiratory care.
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduation from an Associate Degree program in Respiratory Therapy approved by the New York State Board of Education or a program determined equivalent in accordance with the Commissioner of the State Board of Education's regulations; and,
- Possession of a current license to practice as a Respiratory Therapist in the State of New York; and,
- Possession of current registration as a Respiratory Therapist issued by the National Board of Respiratory Care.
Special Notes:
Individuals providing respiratory therapy services in New York on or after January 1, 1994 who believe they will meet, and submit documented evidence from the State Education Department, Division of Professional Licensing Services, of receipt of an application for licensure under the so-called grandparenting provisions of the new licensing law may continue to practice until either December 31, 1994 or receiving notice from the State Education Department of denial of licensure, whichever occurs first.
At the time of appointment, and to maintain the position of Associate Respiratory Therapist, individuals must meet and maintain the licensure requirements set forth by the New York State Education Department covering the practice of respiratory therapy.
