Job Overview
The Behavioral Health Technician II position is responsible for providing direct and supportive care to clients/patients. Duties include overseeing day-to-day activities, monitoring health (vital signs), intervening/responding to crises, communicating with the treatment team, and facilitating group education/structured activities within the scope of credentials/expertise. Behavioral Health Technicians II also ensure a safe, therapeutic, and supportive environment for clients/patients while maintaining accurate documentation of client behaviors and treatment plans. The role requires the ability to redirect clients, assist with medication administration, and support recovery and therapeutic services.

Key Responsibilities:

For Residential Facility and Withdrawal Management:
  • Admit, supervise, monitor, transfer, and discharge clients/patients.
  • Ensure monitoring of vital signs and withdrawal symptoms, escalating to medical intervention when necessary.
  • Obtain and record vital signs and relevant medical symptoms per policy and/or as directed by medical personnel.
  • Oversee medication administration per policy and procedure as permitted by training certifications/permissions.
  • Adhere to all medication policies and work with trained nursing staff to ensure compliance with medication protocols.
  • Maintain accurate records of medication administration, including self-administration by clients or staff-administered medications.
  • Monitor and document the self-administration of over-the-counter (OTC) medications and ensure proper inventory and storage.
  • Report medication errors or discrepancies per agency policy.
  • Follow Medication Storage and Destruction Policy & Procedure.
  • Screen and monitor clients for withdrawal symptoms to ensure safety and recovery needs are met.
  • Facilitate client supervision checks per policy and safety/precautions plans.

For All Locations:
  • Facilitate therapeutic services within scope of credentials/expertise under appropriate supervision (CPS, MAADC).
    • CPS: Peer support individual sessions/group education, assist in development of coping skills, and connect clients to community resources for recovery support.
    • MAADC: Group counseling, family conferences, and individual sessions with an emphasis on healthy decision-making and recovery promotion.
  • Participate in scheduled supervision sessions.
  • Develop/update treatment plans in accordance with State Regulatory/CARF guidelines under supervision.
  • Document services provided in accordance with State Regulatory/CARF/agency standards.
  • Ensure treatment plans, updates, and discharge summaries are reviewed and countersigned by a Qualified Addiction Professional.
  • Assist clients in the transition process, completing transition summaries, plans, or letters as needed.
  • Complete annual training as identified in the individualized training plan.
  • Encourage adherence to program expectations and communicate concerns to the treatment team.
  • Participate in treatment team meetings, identifying client strengths, needs, abilities, and preferences.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by leadership.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of confidentiality laws governing the treatment of substance use and mental health disorders.
  • Basic understanding of case management and rehabilitation methods for mental health and substance use disorder treatment.
  • Knowledge of program policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Understanding of biological, cognitive-affective, and social bases of behavior.
  • Working knowledge of therapeutic techniques and individual differences in human behavior.
  • Capable of conducting individual and group interventions.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to interpret safety rules and procedures, as well as apply common-sense understanding to tasks.
  • Basic keyboarding skills and ability to use electronic medical record systems.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations.
  • Capacity to establish rapport with clients while maintaining professional boundaries.

Experience and Education Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent, plus two (2) years of responsible employment.
  • Experience in human services or a related field preferred.
  • Certification from the Missouri Credentialing Board in one or both of the following:
    • Certified Peer Specialist (CPS), and/or
    • Missouri Associate Alcohol Drug Counselor (MAADC).

Supervisory Requirements:
  • None

Employment Requirements:
  • Successful completion of background check (criminal record, driving record, abuse/neglect check).
  • Completion of New Hire Orientation.
  • Completion of training requirements (including Relias courses) upon hire and annually thereafter.
  • Current driver's license, acceptable driving record, and auto insurance.
  • First Aid and CPR certification within three months of hire and upon renewal.
  • Medication Administration certification as per program standards.
  • Behavioral Management training within 30 days of employment.
  • CPI (Residential) or Crisis Management (Outpatient) training as required.
  • Completion of 36 hours of training every two years and 40 hours annually.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Must be at least 21 years old to operate a company vehicle, and 23 years old for a 15-passenger van.

Physical Requirements:
  • ADA Consideration - Sedentary work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally (up to 1/3 of the time) and/or a negligible amount of force frequently (1/3 to 2/3 of the time) to lift, carry, push, or pull objects.
  • Requires repetitive hand movements (typing, writing) during work shifts.
  • Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time, with occasional walking or standing.
  • Ability to perform duties both in-office and remotely, under all weather conditions.
