Position Title: Behavior Intervention Specialist - School Based
Reports To: Building Principal
Date: May 1, 2024

SUMMARY:
Highly qualified Behavior Intervention Specialist with knowledge of Multi Tired Intervention Supports (MTSS) and skills necessary to assist individuals, groups and systems through the application of positive behavior supports. The Behavior Specialist helps coordinate Functional Assessments of Behavior and Behavior Intervention Plans that address students' inappropriate behaviors and provide a means to help the students become more academically successful. Behavior Intervention Specialist also provides classroom and school-wide behavior management strategies.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (other duties may be assigned)
  • Implementation of MTSS framework in order to develop and support interventions in the areas of: behavior management, conflict resolution, anger management, and peer interaction skills based on the treatment plan goals.
  • Support the development of teachers through evidence-based practices with the goal of increasing student engagement, teacher capacity, and improvement of student achievement across core curriculum subjects and behavioral outcomes.
  • Develop treatment plan goals and provide assistance with behavior interventions for children demonstrating inappropriate behaviors in school.
  • Collect daily data and document progress notes in a prescribed format for each session with the child.
  • Provide therapeutic groups or individual therapeutic sessions.
  • Support teaching staff in the implementation of behavior interventions and treatment plans.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor's or Associates degree in a related human services field (Psychology, Social Work, Education, Criminal Justice, Sociology, etc.).
    • Bachelor's degree in unrelated field, with the equivalent of at least 1 year of full-time work experience in a job that involved direct contact with children/adolescents.
    • Associates degree, or 60 college credits, with at least 3 years of full-time equivalent work experience in a job that involved direct contact with children/adolescents.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
  • Valid Michigan teaching certificate

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as textbooks, teacher manuals, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of students or employees of organization

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY:
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community. Ability to speak clearly and concisely both in oral and written communication. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies. Ability to operate computers and related educational and management software.
