Position Purpose

* To promote health and safety in the school environment and provide health services to students, faculty and staff; to assist with the teaching of sound health practices

Essential Functions

* Reports to the office upon arrival at school
* Checks for messages or materials requiring immediate attention
* Requests clarification of school rules and procedures if necessary
* Arrives in the Nurse's Ofice on schedule to greet students and remains in the assigned area classroom so that students are effectively supervised
* Maintains the established routines and procedures of the school nurse's ofice
* Supports the other school nurses.
* Provides emergency care in case of sudden illness and administers first-aid in case of injury to students or staff according to established policies and procedures
* Notifies Principal or his/her designee to arrange for immediate examination of any pupil who appears to be under the influence of alcohol or other drugs
* Performs other duties within the scope of his/her employment and certification as may be assigned

Equipment

* Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone.

Travel Requirements

* Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards

* Works in standard office and school building environments.

Qualifications Profile

* Valid New Jersey School Nurse Substitute Certificate
* Demonstrated expertise in school health nursing practice and emergency procedures
* Knowledge of child growth and development, community and family dynamics, current health issues and wellness education
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills
* Knowledge of community health and social services resources and ability to communicate effectively with nonschool health professionals and social service agencies
* Required criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status

Education

* Must have RN License

Experience

* Successful prior substitute nursing experience for the appropriate grade level preferred.
