POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Early Education Director and in accordance with the established policies and procedures of the Salina Family YMCA, the Substitute Teacher ensures the safety and well-being of each child in the program at all times by providing a safe and healthy environment under the direction of the teacher responsible for the classroom. This position assists in implementing a developmentally appropriate practice for a group of pre-school age children and providing quality early childhood experiences while following the policies required at that location.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

* Assist in implementing lesson plans based on the license childcare curriculum.
* Assist in the implementation of appropriate behavior management throughout the daily routine.
* Assist in the planning and implementing of the daily program under the direction of the Lead Teacher.
* Complete 16 hours of KDHE-approved training.
* Assist in supervision of the children, classroom, and all activities.
* Helps to maintain a welcoming, clean learning environment.
* Helps preserve the quality of supplies, equipment, and materials.
* Follow the lead of full-time classroom associates to ensure curriculum implementation and a safe environment.
* Active involvement with and supervision of children is required at all times.
* Prepare materials, activities, and environment ahead of time, as needed or assigned.
* Develop and maintain supportive professional relationships with children and their families.
* Maintain staff-to-child ratios within licensing standards and, according to Salina YMCA, for classroom coverage; assist in ensuring adequate staff coverage at all times.
* Attend and participate in team and site meetings, training, professional development, and continuing education.
* Attend required activities, meetings, and training scheduled during evenings and/or weekends.
* Maintain confidentiality regarding children and families.
* Ensure that site-appropriate health, safety, classroom organization, classroom aesthetic, and sanitation guidelines are followed.
* All other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

* Must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver's license.
* Have a minimum of 6 months previous experience working with children.
* Plan, organize and implement age-appropriate/developmentally appropriate program activities.
* Able to work flexible hours and at different childcare centers.
* The ideal candidate must understand multiply family dynamics, their needs, and the needs of at-risk children.
* Have good communication skills and the ability to create a risk-free environment daily.
* The ideal candidate needs to be able to make sound decisions based on factual information regarding child development.
* Required Certifications: CPR/FA, within 30 days of hire.
* A TB test and physical are required within 30 days of hire.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

* Must regularly lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds and occasionally move up to seventy-five (75) pounds in the form of supplies or equipment.
* Able to sit, stand, and bend to perform appropriate tasks.
* Must be able to move at an appropriate pace to respond to emergencies.
* Follow all safety requirements of the Salina Family YMCA.
* May be required to stand for extended periods of time.
* Work in different temperature environments.

The Substitute Teacher will provide quality programs that will increase the participation and retention of the licensed Early Education Center program of the Salina Family YMCA.
