BASIC FUNCTION:

This position is responsible for developing and overseeing the wellness center for the College of Medicine. The Clinical Psychologist will work as a key member of our multi-disciplinary wellness team, providing essential psychological services to our diverse student population. They will assess, diagnose, and treat a wide range of psychological disorders, using evidence-based therapeutic interventions and develop programs to promote wellness.

To fulfill these functions, the Clinical Psychologist is expected to have knowledge and experience in a broad range of evidence-based medical and psychological treatments for a broad range of psychological disorders.

DIMENSIONS:

Development and supervision of clinical services.

Development and supervision of wellness activities.

Outreach and collaboration with College of Medicine student wellness organizations.

NATURE AND SCOPE:

Works collaboratively and professionally in a multidisciplinary setting. Interacts with students, staff and faculty within the College of Medicine and University Counseling services.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Conduct comprehensive psychological assessments to identify students' mental health needs, using a variety of methods such as interviews and psychometric tests.
  • Formulate individualized treatment plans for students, based on their unique needs, and update these plans as necessary throughout the course of treatment.
  • Provide evidence-based psychological treatments, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), psychodynamic therapy, or other relevant therapeutic modalities.
  • Facilitate group therapy sessions, workshops, and wellness seminars as needed, on topics such as stress management, mindfulness, and coping with mental health issues.
  • Documents all patient care or other clinical activity appropriately and in a timely fashion in the Electronic Medical Record or approved medical record systems.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and training activities to stay current with the latest advancements in the field of clinical psychology.
  • Provide crisis intervention and management as necessary.
  • Teaches psychology graduate students and psychology interns on clinical cases.
  • Develops, collaborates, or participates in clinical research in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences; to the extent possible.
  • Promotes adherence and actively participates in the Health Sciences Compliance Program, the Howard University Code of Ethics and the Health Sciences Standards of Conduct.
  • Attends annual and periodic mandatory Compliance Program training including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy training.
  • Participates in activities that promote adherence to federal healthcare program requirements.
  • Adheres to the requirements of the HIPAA Privacy Policies and Procedures.
  • Assumes other duties and responsibilities that are related and appropriate to the position and area.

  • Excellence in teaching, mentoring, and supervising residents, pre- and post-doctoral students, and clinical staff and personnel.
  • Understanding of clinical research methods and experience in clinical research.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment that follows ethical guidelines and Hospital procedures.
  • Excellent ability to communicate verbally and in writing in English.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and harmonious work relationships with residents, students, colleagues, staff, physicians, Hospital and University officials and employees, patients, family members, and the general public.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Satisfactory completion of an American Psychological Association (APA) accredited doctoral program (Ph.D. or Psy.D) in clinical and an (APA) accredited clinical internship.
  • District of Columbia (D.C.) License to practice psychology.
  • Four (4) years of responsible work experience in clinical psychology, including at least one year practicing as a licensed Clinical Psychologist and teaching or supervising trainees.
