Mechanical Inspector III

EXAMINATION IS ANNOUNCED TO ESTABLISH AN EMPLOYMENT LIST TO FILL ONE (1) CURRENT WEST JEFFERSON VACANCY IN THE DEPARTMENT OF BUILDING PERMITS.

This employment list will also be used for future EAST AND WEST Jefferson vacancies in this Department as they occur.This position is responsible for determining work priorities, assigning work, and overseeing the work of Mechanical Inspectors. The employee provides instruction and training in the proper methods and processes necessary to carry out mechanical inspector assignments. Coordinates and organizes the work of the unit. Drives to and from various locations throughout Jefferson Parish to perform job tasks. Inspects mechanical and natural gas systems, equipment, installations and components such as heating, air conditioning, ventilation, (HVAC) systems; related mechanical and gas appliances, elevators, gas lines, moving stairs, incinerators, amusement devices and other related equipment and components for compliance with applicable codes, standards and ordinances. Reviews permits, activity logs and inspection reports. Receives and investigates complaints as well as issues violation and correction notices.  Position requires driving of a personal vehicle, thus possession of a valid driver's license, acceptable driving record, and personal automobile with minimum liability insurance available for business use (business travel is reimbursed on a mileage basis) will be given preference.

NOTE: Employees in this position will be required to obtain certification by the International Code Council (ICC) as a Mechanical Plans Examiner prior to the completion of their probationary period.

Possession of current certification by the International Code Council (ICC) as a Residential Mechanical Inspector and Commercial Mechanical Inspector; PLUS, meets ONE of the following three options:

I. Current employment with Jefferson Parish and permanent civil service status in the classification of Mechanical Inspector II.

OR

II. Possession of a current Journeyman/Master Natural Gas Fitter license issued by the State Plumbing Board of Louisiana; plus, possession of a current Mechanical Work (Statewide) license issued by the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors (LSLBC) or a current Mechanical Contractor's license* issued by Jefferson Parish.

OR

III. A minimum of seven (7) years of verifiable, paid, journeyman-level experience performing gas pipefitting installations under the supervision of a Louisiana Master Natural Gas Fitter and HVAC installations under the supervision of a Louisiana Statewide Licensed Mechanical Contractor.

* Proof of eligibility to renew the J.P. Mechanical Contractor's license (without re-testing) may be acceptable for qualifying purposes.

PREFERRED: ICC certification as a Mechanical Plans Examiner is preferred.

Related education, experience, and/or professional certification(s) above and beyond the minimum qualifications will be required for consideration of an entrance salary above the minimum rate.(ENTRANCE AND PROMOTIONAL)

The examination may consist of a written test, a rating of training and experience, an oral panel interview or any combination thereof. Acceptable applicants will be notified of the time, date, and place of any assembled testing. Applicants must supply complete and accurate information concerning their training and experience including a detailed description of their work experience, the names and addresses of all previous employers and the dates of employment. The information is subject to verification and the Personnel Department reserves the right to determine the quality and quantity of education and experience claimed for credit.
