**Position Summary**

Under supervision, performs a range of clinical and anatomic pathology procedures on laboratory animals or specimens derived from them

**Job Responsibilities**

+ Assists pathologist with necropsies and/or performs independent necropsies on small animals as required.

+ Performs euthanasia techniques on small rodents and aquatic species utilizing established protocols.

+ Collects blood and other specimens from laboratory animals both pre- and post-mortem.

+ Provides photographic or radiographic (faxitron) assistance, including provision of appropriately labeled markers. Develops radiographs and transfers electronic image files to a database.

+ Trims and cassettes both histology and anatomic pathology cases. Compiles trim sheets, decalcifies tissues, transports cassettes to histology, loads tissue processor and participates in the trimming quality assurance program.

+ Maintains pathologists' necropsy notes and trimming guides. Distributes same to pathologists or with cases as needed.

+ Enters histology and necropsy test requirements, assessments and activity codes into the laboratory information system application. Consults with pathologists and modifies accession requests as needed. Guides investigative staff on system submissions.

+ Files histologic slides and blocks.

+ Ensures the cleanliness and sterilization of necropsy instruments, equipment and rooms. Disposes of hazardous material waste and wet tissues utilizing established protocols.

+ Monitors and maintains schedules and usage of necropsy suite to ensure proper protocols are followed.

+ Assists with training investigators on necropsy suite protocols and procedures.

+ Maintains hard copy and/or electronic files and databases. Ensures the security, accuracy and integrity of records.

+ Maintains inventory of supplies, equipment and/or reagents. May order supplies/equipment/reagents as authorized or ensure that needs are escalated appropriately. Receives supply orders and confirms accuracy of delivery. May assist with cost control.

**Education**

+ High School Diploma

**Experience**

Approximately 1 year of experience in handling laboratory animals.

Thorough knowledge of modern laboratory techniques and procedures.

Good knowledge of histologic techniques.

Good knowledge of related laboratory terminology.

Skill in the operation of standard laboratory equipment and apparatus.

Familiarity with the techniques of maintaining a filing system.

Accuracy and good dexterity.

**Knowledge, Skills and Abilities**

+ Ability to understand and follow complex technical instructions.

+ Demonstrated strong organizational skills and ability to pay close attention to detail.

+ Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office Suite and database applications.

This position requires full mobility and the ability to lift or move up to 25 pounds; This role requires exposure to laboratory animals, blood borne pathogens, latex and volatile and non-volatile chemicals used for tissue preservation and processing; Protective equipment including uniforms, steel-toe shoes, masks, aprons, gloves and head covers are provided and required for specific activities
