Department Summary

The University of North Texas Health Science Center (UNTHSC), located in the charming Cultural District of Fort Worth, Texas, is nationally recognized for its medical school, graduate student education, and health professions, pharmacy, and public health programs. The Department of Pharmacology and Neuroscience (P&N) is internationally recognized for its commitment to impactful biomedical research, robust education of future healthcare providers, outstanding graduate training, and selfless community outreach. The P&N Department is the faculty home to several research institutes that organize and support focused, basic and translational multidisciplinary research efforts, including the North Texas Eye Research Institute (NTERI).

Position Overview

The University of North Texas Health Science Center (UNTHSC), located in the charming Cultural District of Fort Worth, Texas, is nationally recognized for its medical school, graduate student education, and health professions, pharmacy, and public health programs. The Department of Pharmacology and Neuroscience (P&N) is internationally recognized for its commitment to impactful biomedical research, robust education of future healthcare providers, outstanding graduate training, and selfless community outreach. The P&N Department is the faculty home to several research institutes that organize and support focused, basic and translational multidisciplinary research efforts, including the North Texas Eye Research Institute (NTERI).

The P&N Department and NTERI of the University of North Texas Health Science Center (UNTHSC) at Fort Worth are jointly looking for individual who possess exceptional expertise in various aspects of visual sciences. This encompasses a broad spectrum of specializations, such as cornea, neuroscience, retinal cell biology, the development of the visual system, and research into degenerative diseases affecting the visual apparatus.

Minimum Qualifications

Open Track. Once we have identified the final candidate, we can determine the rank based on the candidate's qualification.

Assistant Professor

* A Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in the relevant field.
* Strong academic credentials, including a record of scholarly publications in reputable journals or conferences.
* Demonstrated expertise in a specialized area of research, with a clear research agenda and potential for future growth.
* Evidence of conducting independent research, including grants or funding obtained.
* Ability to demonstrate a track record of obtaining external research funding, such as grants from government agencies (e.g., NIH, NSF), private foundations, or industry.
* While the primary focus is on research, teaching experience or potential may be required, depending on the institution's expectations.
* Ability to mentor graduate students and supervise their research.

Associate Professor

* A Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in the relevant field.
* Continued scholarly productivity and strong record of publications in reputable journals or conferences.
* Established expertise in a specialized area of research, with robust and sustained research agenda.
* Proven ability to secure external research funding from competitive grants, government agencies (e.g., NIH, NSF), private foundations, or industry.
* Demonstrated success in obtaining substantial external research funding to support ongoing and future research projects.
* Continued ability to secure funding to advance research initiatives and mentor junior researchers.
* Excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels, with a track record of effective instruction and mentorship.
* Experience supervising graduate students and postdoctoral researchers in research activities.

Full Professor

* Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in the relevant field.
* Continued scholarly productivity and an outstanding record of publications in top-tier journals or conferences.
* Established international recognition and leadership in a specialized area of research.
* Extensive and influential contributions to the field, demonstrated through a substantial record of high-impact publications, invited presentations, and keynote addresses.
* Exceptional ability to secure and manage substantial external research funding from competitive grants, government agencies (e.g., NIH, NSF), private foundations, or industry.
* Demonstrated ability to consistently secure significant external research funding to support innovative and impactful research programs.
* Leadership in obtaining and managing large-scale grants and contracts to advance research initiatives and mentor junior researchers.
* Excellence in teaching at the undergraduate, graduate, and possibly postgraduate levels, with a distinguished record of effective instruction and mentorship.
* Mentorship of junior faculty, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers in research activities.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

* All candidates must have a Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Neuroscience, or an allied life sciences discipline, and a minimum of 4 years of postdoctoral experience.
* Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, University policies and procedures
* Ability to provide support for student development with a demonstrable concern for students
* Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
* Ability to work effectively within a complex organization structure
* Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships

Preferred Qualifications

* Successful candidates must hold a PhD and demonstrate a track record of publications in leading peer-reviewed journals. Candidates with a proven record of independent, extramural research funding will receive priority consideration. Investigators will be appointed at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level, based upon qualifications and experience.

Job Duties:

* Teaching and mentoring of graduate students.
* Advancing an already established, high-quality record of peer-reviewed publications in vision-focused research.
* Participating in the activities of departmental committees.
* Maintaining a safe work environment, including ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal legislation, and the undertaking of risk assessments
* Collaborating within and outside the School of Biomedical Sciences.
* Seeking extramural support in both individual and collaborative manners to support high quality research.
* Supervising students, postdoctoral trainees, and technical staff undertaking research projects.
* Participating in UNTHSC-wide, as well as local, national, and international, service activities
* Upholding high professional standards and leading by example.
* Pursuing additional professional and service activities as assigned by the P&N Department Chair and the NTERI Executive Director.
* Promoting the mission, vision, and values of UNTHSC.
