Christ Episcopal School, a small independent school of 130 students, seeks a motivated, engaged, and empathetic individual for the part-time PreK-8th Grade Counselor position. The School Counselor works under the direction of the Preschool, Lower School, and Middle School Division Heads and Head of School, to provide counseling services and support to students and families in grades PreK through 8th grades. The PreK-8 School Counselor will work with students, parents, and staff to assist all students in developing academic, social, and emotional success. The counselor will identify and support the social emotional needs of all preK-8 students. This is a 10-month position, following the school academic calendar.

The preK-8 School Counselor helps students attain an optimum level of personal and social adjustment and assists with their academic and social-emotional development.

The Counselor should:
  • Provide short-term, solution-focused support through individual and group counseling to students in grades pre-k through 8th grade.
  • Foster and sustain an atmosphere of emotional wellness among employees and students.
  • Develop school-based programs to support the psychological well-being of students within the context of the school community.
  • Implement a school-wide approach to social and emotional learning/education.
  • Maintain knowledge of current state laws in order to advise the administration regarding appropriate policies for reporting child abuse and neglect. Provides or coordinates mandatory reporting training annually for faculty and administrators.
  • Teach lessons to students in the Lower School and Middle School divisions that support the social and emotional educational needs of the students.
  • Attend divisional faculty meetings or grade-level team meetings to provide support for faculty and students.
  • Coordinate parent education and parent meetings to help our community learn about important issues related to adolescent development and parenting.
  • Educate the parents, faculty, and administrators on components of the school counseling program, roles and responsibilities of the school counselor, ways in which the faculty and administrators can utilize the counseling program on behalf of students, and expectations parents, faculty, and administrators should have of the counseling program.
  • Maintain a high regard for the privacy and confidentiality of information collected about individuals with whom they work. Explain the limits of confidentiality, as determined by the School, to individual students and parents.
  • Refer students with significant needs to appropriate outside providers for further diagnosis / treatment.
  • Maintain student files and records in compliance with federal and local laws and professional guidelines.
  • Remain current in clinical knowledge and best practices of a school counselor through individualized professional development and a continuing education plan.
  • Comply with all rules and regulations established as school policy.

SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Effectively communicate and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted during the course of work both orally and in writing.
  • Adhere to curricular objectives; participate in social-emotional curriculum development.
  • Establish and maintain professional relationships.
  • Prepare and present in-service trainings.
  • Develop and maintain an atmosphere of mutual respect among students, teachers, and staff.
  • Prepare and maintain a variety of confidential comprehensive reports, records, and files.
  • Meet schedules and timelines.
  • Plan and organize work.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's Degree in clinical or counseling psychology, social work, school counseling, or related field required.
  • Licensure commensurate with degree required (i.e. LPC, LP, LMFT, LMSW).
  • Experience working in a counseling setting and implementing a variety of treatment modalities, such as CBT, TF-CBT, MBCT, and/or MBSR.
  • Experience developing and implementing mental health programs.
  • Experience working in a school setting is preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • 15 hours per week, Mondays through Fridays, August through June (10 months)
  • Work is predominantly in-school environment.
  • Daily contact with students, teachers, and school staff.
  • Regular/occasional contact with parents, community members, and outside providers.
