Position Summary

Works under general supervision of an assigned supervisor in the Communications Center of the Shelby County Sheriff's Office. Operates computer based multi-key telephone instruments, computer aided dispatch system, TTY telephone system for the deaf, NCIC/TCIC/SCATS/JMS/JSS/Visions computer systems, computer-based radio consoles, paging, alarm systems, and other systems to provide radio dispatch services to the citizens of Shelby County, Tennessee.

Pay Grade: 48

Salary Commensurate with Experience and Education

Minimum Qualifications

100% -

1. Minimum age requirement is 18.

2. Discharged under honorable conditions from armed forces, if applicable;

3. Will be screened for misdemeanor/felony record; Must not have been convicted of, or plead guilty to, or entered a plea of no contest to any felony charge, or any violation of federal or state laws or city ordinances relating to force, violence, theft, dishonesty, gambling, liquor or controlled substance;

4. High school diploma or possess GED at the time of application;

5. Must attend and successfully complete a state-mandated training school and NCIC certification class within six (6) months from the date of employment.

6. PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Responsible for efficient and effective operation of dispatch office equipment, effective and timely usage of resources and ability to make quick, sound decisions.

2. Receives, monitors, and responds to all incoming emergencies, complaints and routine calls by telephone and radio.

3. Makes decisions and gives Dispatcher information to appropriate manpower by established protocols.

4. Maintains proper operation and maintenance of radios and communication equipment.

5. Leads and directs officers to designated locations.

6. Develops and maintains records/logs of all calls and ensures established procedures are followed.

7. Relays certain calls and information to supervisor and/or shift leader as established within protocols.

8. Advises supervisor of problems with communications equipment and ensures constant working order.

9. Maintains records and files under established guidelines.

10. Performs other related duties as required or directed.

KSAs -

1. Ability to speak clearly and concisely and have good diction.

2. Ability to evaluate situations and to take appropriate action.

3. Ability to extract pertinent information from emergency callers and transfer information to appropriate departments or dispatch necessary resources.

4. Ability to comprehend communications theory training and demonstrate knowledge and/or education on the job.

5. Ability to monitor and maintain a communication recording system.

6. Basic knowledge of radio and telephone equipment.

7. Ability to deal with the public, fellow employees, and others with courtesy and tact.

8. Ability to prepare reports and maintain records and files.

9. Skilled in simultaneous listening and manual dexterity.

10. Skilled in computer usage.

Physical Requirements

Must pass pre-employment testing, including a physical, hearing, and eye exam for emergency dispatchers.

Special Requirements

1. Must pass an Assessment Skills Pre-Employment Test (Criticall).

2. Must be able to work rotating shifts, holidays, and weekends.

3. Individuals will be required to successfully pass all certification/training requirements for each experience level of Dispatcher.

4. Must be able to successfully pass a psychological evaluation and a drug screen.

5. Experience working on a multi-line phone system or 2-way radio system is highly desired.

6. Must be able to multi-task in an intense environment.
