Position Summary

* Responsible for managing the technical and quality assurance operations of the HLA department. Responsible for the selection, implementation and quality assurance of new equipment. Establishes and monitors all procedures and quality control, quality assurance and proficiency testing programs. Ensures the accuracy and validity of test results and compliance with regulatory agency requirements. Works with the Laboratory Director, Transplant Physicians and Medical Director in the development of departmental long-range planning and budget preparation. Interacts with NorDx staff and clients, providing clinical information as appropriate.

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

* Education: A Ph.D. and/or M.D. degree required.
* License/Certification: Board certification or eligible for certification by the American College of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ACHI) required.. Must meet CLIA requirements for a Technical Supervisor.
* Experience: Experience in histocompatibility testing, transplant immunology and immunogenetics which meets the requirements for .ACHI Board certification. Must be able to provide clinical laboratory support for solid organ transplantation program..
* Advanced level proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Access)
* Strong interpersonal communication skills both verbal and written required.

Position Summary:

The Director of Histocompatibility Laboratory is responsible for the overall management of the histocompatibility laboratory. Preference will be given to individuals with prior clinical experience in solid organ transplants. Candidate should be familiar with all aspects of laboratory QA/QC programs as they pertain to renal organ transplantation. Clinical consultations as well as involvement in the development of technical protocols for clinical testing including HLA typing (SSP, qPCR, NGS), crossmatching (flow cytometry), solid phase HLA antibody testing. Individual in this position is responsible for the quality of operations & services provided by the histocompatibility laboratory, including the responsibility for reviewing and overseeing all technical aspects of the laboratory. This individual directs technologist staff and is responsible for the design, implementation and review of all technical processes that involve the histocompatibility lab. This individual is responsible for personnel management, exemplary customer service, development, implementation and monitoring of testing, staff training and evaluation and budget management.

The laboratory provides 24/7 service to the MaineHealth transplant program. The Director will have on-call responsibilities, including consults for virtual crossmatching, and technical/interpretation questions, as needed. The candidate will also help with the training and education of laboratory personnel, residents, and fellows from Nephrology and Surgery departments. The Director also represents MaineHealth at local, regional and national levels as a liaison between Maine Medical Center and the various agencies and professional organizations.
