JOB SUMMARY:
The Hospital Lead Inpatient Coder is an advanced coding position responsible for accurate and timely assignment of diagnosis and procedure codes for all complex health records. Interprets a wide variety of clinical and diagnostic documentation, to identify diagnoses, complications, comorbidities, and procedures associated with episodes of care. Assigns current edition ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and DRG group assignments for hospital services as directed.
The Hospital Lead Inpatient Coder will achieve and maintain the highest standards of coding quality by utilizing coding guidelines and standards established by St. Tammany Health System (STHS), the CMS ICD-CM/PCS Official Coding Guidelines, the AHA Coding Clinic for ICD-CM/PCS, and the AHIMA Standards of Ethical Coding. The Hospital Lead Inpatient Coder position requires advanced coding experience in specialized areas of coding and requires certification by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).
This position assists in resolving interdepartmental coding inquiries and communicates with various departments within the St Tammany Health System regarding coding, billing and revenue cycle issues. Working in collaboration with the Coding leadership this position will assist with coding denial requests, and orientation of peer coders or new hires as assigned. The Hospital Lead Inpatient Coder should have the ability to meet productivity standards and quality measures as designated by best practice measures established by STHS and AHIMA. The Hospital Lead Inpatient Coder will recognize the STHS established Key Performance Indicators (KPI's) and necessity to meet and report progress.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
* High School diploma required
* Completion of an AHIMA-approved coding program, or associate degree in health information management or a related field.
* In lieu of higher education requirement, an equivalent combination of years of education and experience in performing inpatient and outpatient coding for acute care hospitals can be demonstrated. Four years of current complex outpatient or inpatient coding experience and/or successful completion of the STHS Senior Certified Coding Specialist Transition Program will meet this requirement.
* Skills in written and verbal communication, planning, organizing, delegating, problem solving, decision making, analytics, time management and organization, identifying coding problems and resolutions, and dealing with multiple projects and interruptions.
* Ability to read and interpret medical charts, examine documents for accuracy and completeness, enter data accurately, review and comprehend and analyze data reports, work with and learn new computer systems and office equipment, work independently, self-motivate others, meet deadlines, multi-task, problem solve, make independent decisions, collaborate, and promote teamwork using strong interpersonal skills
Knowledge of:
* ICD-10-CM, ICD10-PCS, official coding guidelines, and coding compliance requirements
* Current classification systems and DRG assignment methodology
* Medicare, Medicaid, and other third-payer documentation, billing, and coding practices to include Prospective Payment System (PPS) methodology for Inpatient
* Ethical standards of coding
* Medical terminology, anatomy, and body systems
* HIPAA privacy and confidentiality regulations
* Policies and procedures to adequately respond to colleagues
* Microsoft Office (Excel, Power Point, Visio), Epic, 3M, Codify, Revenue Cycle Pro, and ICD11 principle
Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's or associate degree in health information management or coding preferred. Five to six years of current complex outpatient or inpatient coding experience. Must possess good physical health. Some requirements include but are not limited to standing, sitting or walking for long periods of time. Lifting up to 10 pounds is required.
