POSITION TITLE: Early Childhood Bus Aide

REPORTS TO: Director of Transportation/ Early Childhood Director

POSITION SUMMARY: Performs duties to ensure the safety and supervision of ECSE students on designated bus routes.

FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

Essential Functions

  1. Supervises the loading onto bus and unloading of assigned students, and other students as required.
  2. Performs securing and checking of students' seat belts and/or restraints.
  3. Cooperates with teachers, teachers' aides and/or assistants in exchanging students at bus loading/unloading areas.
  4. Cooperates with parents and/or guardians during loading and unloading, in a proper and pleasant manner.
  5. Cooperates with the bus driver in a mutually responsible manner, during loading, unloading and travel time.
  6. Monitors children during travel time to ensure their safety and well-being.


Marginal Functions

  1. Assists occasionally with route directions to pick up or deliver children when there is a substitute driver.
  2. Comforts any student who is upset.
  3. Assists in fire drills or other safety drills.


Physical/Visual Activities or Demands: Physical/visual activities or demands that are commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job.

  1. Standing, walking, sitting, climbing, balancing, stooping or crouching, reaching, grasping, talking, hearing.
  2. Normal attention with clarity of vision at 20 inches or less as well as 20 feet or more required.
  3. Moderate physical demand with lifting (or assisting) average weight (25 to 60 lbs.) children by hand on a daily basis.
  1. Must be able to manipulate zippers and seat belt fasteners in a timely manner.
  2. Must be able to assist the driver with a bus evacuation in the event of an emergency.


Environmental/Atmospheric Conditions: Environmental and atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job.

Subject to both inside and outside working conditions, with regular travel on school bus required.

POSITION QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Education: Basic knowledge of arithmetic, spelling, English, and grammar. Accuracy in checking, posting, proofreading and counting, equivalent to high school diploma. GED may be accepted.

Skills and Abilities which may be representative but not all inclusive of those commonly associated with this position:

  1. Apply commonsense understanding to carry out one or two-step instructions. Deal with standardized situations with occasional or no variables in or from these situations encountered on the job.
  2. Add and subtract two digit numbers. Perform the four basic arithmetic operations.
  3. Reading, writing, and speaking at a basic level.
  4. Must possess positive, effective "people skills".
