Summary

Provides technical expertise in a variety of complex diagnostic ultrasound procedures in an acute care hospital setting for diagnostic medical sonography, including obstetrics, gynecology, abdominal, small parts imaging and guidance for invasive procedures with the Radiologist. Must be able to independently and competently perform all procedures in the department and be willing to train in vascular sonography.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Accurately performs ultrasound examinations upon a physician's request.
  • Performs all duties in an independent, professional manner with little or no supervision.
  • Maintains and consistently demonstrates competence in patient education, positioning and patient preparation.
  • Consistently follows department protocols for ultrasound procedures as required.
  • Consistently demonstrates technical proficiency in producing exceptional diagnostic examinations; should images be suboptimal due to equipment malfunctions or patient condition, that fact is clearly communicated to interpreting physician.
  • Routinely seeks clinical guidance from Radiologist, or accesses other appropriate resources for concerns about delivery of clinical care and/or imaging process.
  • Assists with coordination of multiple modality imaging procedures to patients to expedite service, reduce delays and increase efficiency.
  • Assumes responsibility for ultrasound department during absence of department head.
  • Assumes department quality of service is enhanced through personal actions.
  • Consistently demonstrates a conscientious approach in provision of ultrasound procedures, non-invasive vascular testing, to all customers: physicians, patient referring units, and other departments interrelated in provision of health care.
  • Accepts constructive criticism from supervisor or other individuals in leadership or clinical roles to ensure further improvement in delivery of quality service.
  • Consistently coordinates work to achieve maximum productivity and efficiency during assigned shift; responsibly completes all procedures scheduled or requested during shift without sacrificing quality of work performed or excessive use or overtime.
  • Consistently shows ability to recognize and deal with priorities and atypical situations; demonstrating flexibility to perform effectively with all ultrasound modalities while generating optimum diagnostic procedures.
  • Maintains and consistently demonstrates competence in ultrasound principles and technical factors. Can select and modify technical factors as needed on ultrasound equipment.
  • Maintains personal familiarity with understanding about, operation of, and safe performance of department clinical equipment; diagnostic units and probes, recorders and imaging cameras; oxygen and suctions systems.
  • Consistently performs all imaging and computer processing in accordance with established procedures and programs; consistently demonstrates ability to produce imaging studies of optimum diagnostic quality for physician's interpretation.
  • Participates in on-call schedule on a rotational basis. Works variable shifts as necessary.
  • Demonstrates System Values in performance and behavior.
  • Complies with System policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.

Minimum Education/Experience

Associates Degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school

6 months to 1 year of relevant experience

Required Licenses/Certifications

Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers - Upon hire

BLS: Employee will be enrolled in the Resuscitation Quality Improvement (RQI) Basic Life Support (BLS) Entry or Prep Curriculum (depending on their previous BLS certification). - Within 3 months of hire into job

American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography - within 1 year of hire into job (must be board eligible and acquired ARDMS certification within one year of employment)

Other Experience/Qualifications

Required:

  • Experience in the acute care hospital setting performing sonography in the specialties of obstetrics, gynecology, abdominal, small parts and guidance procedures.
  • Advanced cross-sectional anatomy, pathophysiology and its effect on normal anatomy.
  • Technical knowledge of operation of sophisticated ultrasound equipment including duplex doppler, color flow, 2D, 3D & 4D imaging and post processing.
  • Must be willing to train in vascular.

Preferred:

  • American Registry for Diagnostic Sonography (ARDMS)
