Serves as the primary resource to participants regarding screening, consenting, collections, pre and post procedure information while following Standard Operating Procedures (SOP); assists in the shipping and handling of research specimens. Provides timely document review, tracks errors and offers solutions on process improvement.

  • Performs phlebotomy and the collection of human specimens to include saliva, urine, whole blood and apheresis derived components
  • Properly interprets orders and maintains participant/collection records for accurate and complete specimen delivery
  • Assists with participant screening, eligibility determination, procedures, medication preparation and the monitoring of adverse reactions
  • Conducts collection and or client specific consenting processes ensuring all SOP and regulatory components have been satisfied
  • Handles specimens according to SOP and prepares for shipping
  • Creates and maintains relationships with participants and internal departments to schedule appointments and arrange for further compatibility testing
  • Complies with all occupational safety, health policies, or regulatory bodies to include assisting with audit and inspections
  • Completes, performs, and tracks all data entry to include investigations and error management
  • Completes all assigned training and states up to date and compliant.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

High School diploma and one (1) year of phlebotomy/apheresis experience or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND DESIGNATIONS:

Collaborative Institutional Training Initiatives (CITI) certification preferred. 

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS:
  • Knowledge of the Code of Federal Regulations pertaining to Human Subject Research, Human Cell Collections, and Good Manufacturing Practices
  • Ability to adapt and communicate professionally and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Knowledge of computer applications including knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Ability to multi-task, set priorities and manage time effectively
  • Ability to read, understand and follow documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and regulatory guidelines
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
  • Ability to engage in adult learning methodologies for the purposes of department training
  • Strong phone and verbal communication skills and active listening skills
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups or employees of the organization
  • Ability to speak, write, read, and understand English; bilingual Spanish preferred.

Tasks involves periodic performance of moderately physically demanding work, usually involving lifting, carrying, pushing and/or of moderately heavy objects and materials (up to 50 pounds). Tasks that require moving objects of significant weight require the assistance of another person and/or use of proper techniques and moving equipment. Tasks may involve some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, walking, standing, and manual dexterity in the operation of phlebotomy equipment. Additional, tasks may involve manual dexterity, visual acuity, hearing acuity, and extended periods of time at a keyboard or work station.

Functions are regularly performed inside and/or outside with potential for exposure to adverse conditions, such as inclement weather, atmospheric elements and pathogenic substances. Performance of this job could expose the employee to blood-borne pathogens. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
