Boston, United States Brigham and Women's Hospital Full time

Overview

Brigham and Women's Hospital, affiliate of Harvard Medical School and a world leader in biomedical research, is looking for an exceptional candidate to join a multidisciplinary team led by Michael Miller, M.D., Ph.D., Assistant Professor in the Division of Neuropathology. The group utilizes emerging technologies in single-cell and molecular biology to probe the mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases, including the emerging role of somatic genetic mutations in disease. Our research program is undergoing a phase of growth, and this position offers a unique opportunity to shape the development of this program.

We are searching for a talented, organized, detail-oriented, and enthusiastic individual to support these efforts. The candidate's background must demonstrate a proven ability to contribute to high-quality research projects, working both collaboratively and with areas of independence. Working under the general supervision of Dr. Miller, the successful candidate will conduct a variety of experiments with established methodologies. Responsibilities would also include analysis of data using basic statistics, and literature searches under the supervision of the supervisor. Based on the qualifications and experience of the candidate, the candidate may work with greater independence, develop modified and new techniques, serve in a supervisory role, and be responsible for orienting and training new staff. The level and salary of the position would be commensurate with the qualifications of the successful candidate.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

* Under general supervision, perform experiments including cell preparation from human or rodent tissue, cell sorting, molecular biology methods, specific assays, cell culture, and preparing special materials (Specific examples may include: isolation of cellular nuclei, fluorescence-activated cell sorting, whole-genome amplification of single cells, DNA quantitation, polymerase chain reaction).
* Maintain and organize frozen human tissue storage. May maintain tissue cultures of human cell lines and monitor cells for viability and contamination.
* Document, compile, and analyze data, potentially using advanced statistical techniques.
* Perform literature searches and help to prepare presentations and written articles for publication.
* In collaboration with PI or Research Manager, establish new and modify existing research techniques.
* Coordinate schedule of tests and procedures.
* Attend and present at team meetings to share results, plan projects and experiments, and ensure that projects support team goals.
* May assist in the orientation and training of new staff.
* May coordinate lab activities such as infection control, human studies institutional review board (IRB) activities, and bio-safety activities.
* May perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

B.S. or B.A. in biological sciences, or a related field, is required.

New graduate with relevant course and project work. Candidates with at least one year experience in a relevant research setting are encouraged, with position level commensurate with qualifications.

Skills/Abilities/Competencies Required

* Prior molecular, cellular and biochemical experience desired
* Outstanding personal initiative and communication skills
* Ability to work independently and on multi-discipline project teams
* Exceptional organizational and time-management skills, lab notebook practices, and attention to detail
* Able to logically and effectively structure tasks and set priorities
* Sound analytical skills, with ability to develop and adapt approaches in a changing environment, and troubleshoot to solve problems
* High degree of computer literacy, to utilize local and shared electronic resources
* Ability to analyze date statistically and to logically present it

Supervisory Responsibility

The successful candidate may have the opportunity to hold supervisory responsibilities, depending on qualifications and level. Supervisory responsibilities would include training and orienting new staff, playing a role in the development of our growing research program.

Applicants should submit a cover letter stating the motivation, CV, and contact information of 3 references (names, e-mail addresses and phone numbers). Shortlisted candidates will be contacted for interviews.
