Responsibilities

Position Summary:

The quality Assurance specialist, with guidance from the Chief and Laboratory Supervisor, oversees the Transfusion Medicine and Blood Bank and Stem Cell Processing Lab quality assurance programs. S/he is responsible for all aspects of the Quality Plans, which includes the quality policy, quality essentials, process documentation, critical control points, supporting documents and system checks. S/he assures that QC activities follow current Federal and State regulations, AABB Standards and FACT regulations. The QA specialist is also responsible for equipment and modified product QC, maintenance of the related databases and follow-up/corrective actions. The specialist is responsible for training of Blood Bank staff in QA/QC. S/he will maintain the QC procedure manual and will assist with maintenance of other procedure manuals and related staff sign-off and competency. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential for the individual in this position to possess.

Job Duties:

* Manages the quality control program including duty scheduling, documentation, data review, trouble shooting, feedback and monthly statistics. (20%)


* Manages maintenance, trouble shooting and minor repair of equipment. Interacts with MEL, Facilities or other services for major maintenance and repairs. (20%)


* Maintains procedure manuals for quality control. (5%)


* Trains and maintains competency of Blood Bank staff in quality control and quality assurance. (5%)


* Maintains the Quality Plan keeping the quality policy, quality essentials, process documentation, critical control points supporting documents and system checks current. (5%)


* Coordinates performance of system checks and monitors. Prepares summaries with action plans and follow-up.(5%)


* Coordinates self-assessments and follow-up on action plans. (3%)


* Interact with regulatory inspectors, auditors and assessors. (2%)


* Keeps abreast of FDA, NYS, JCAHO, CAP, FACT and AABB regulations and standards and acts to implement compliance, change and /or corrective action. (5%)


* Develops strategies for overall department performance improvement. (5%)

Relationships/Authorities:

Reports to the Blood Bank Chief Supervisor

Education/Experience:

BS in MT or an equivalent combination of education and/or work experience

Possesses a NYS license as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist

Minimum 2 years Blood Bank experience

Experience with quality systems planning and /or ISO 9000

Certification as a quality auditor [CQA (ASQ)] preferred

Pay Range

Pay Range: $36.50 - $47.45 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
