The Relief Detention Officer is responsible for assisting Detention Officers to provide juveniles in detention with a calm, safe, and secure environment which promotes the growth of responsible behavior.

Responsible for admissions and releases of youth.

Observes and documents youth's daily behavior.

Responsible for youth's human rights.

Maintains the physical conditions of detention in accordance with established procedures.

Supervises and controls youth on regular programs, activities, and special groups.

Participates/conducts activities coordinated by Shift Supervisors, School Teacher, or Treatment Counselor.

Completes duties as assigned by supervisors.

Possesses knowledge of juvenile legal system.

Relates well in a teamwork modality.

Performs other duties as assigned.High School Diploma or G.E.D.  Preference given to persons holding a Bachelors Degree, preferably in the Social Sciences, or any combination of education and experience that would provide the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge and ability, in the opinion of management, required to perform the job. 

Valid First Aid and CPR card must be acquired.

Must be at least 21 years of age.

Valid Driver's license.

Must pass the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission Physical Ability Testing (PAT) standard prior to interviewing for the position. The PAT consists of 12 sit-ups in 90 seconds, 10 push-ups in 90 seconds, and 15 squat thrusts in 3 minutes. Knowledge of juvenile development, group interaction, group behavior, housekeeping and cleaning methods, food handling, and safety practices.

Ability to effectively relate to juveniles to meet their needs in a highly secure setting.

Must be able to function in a secure setting.

Ability to work effectively with and show support to other Juvenile Detention Officers on the same shift and other shifts.

Ability to maintain consistency and discipline.

Must be able to write and speak effectively, and to follow written and oral instructions.

Note:  Classification is designed as a high exposure classification as defined under the Washington Health & Safety Act and Washington Administrative Code governing Washington Industrial Health & Safety Act for Bloodborne Pathogens protocol.

Note:  Driving a motor vehicle is an essential function of this job.
