GEICO's Claims Legal is looking to hire an Associate Counsel to direct the disposition of matters involving, but not limited to, legal questions and/or claims having moderately high dollar exposure. In this role you will handle files, including bad faith and extracontractual claims and coverage disputes, with moderate supervision of Managing Counsel. You will provide legal advice and recommendations on claims handling, including coverage denials, coverage disclaimers, and litigation strategy. You will also conduct research on legal issues affecting a claim or a Company process and will participate in group and individual projects. You will develop training and draft legal memoranda to inform claims associates of new laws and procedures affecting claims and the Company.

Primary Responsibilities:

* Manage and direct the disposition of complex matters, including claims with high dollar exposure, bad faith allegations, and coverage issues.


* Provide legal advice and recommendations, both in writing and orally, on claims handling, coverage analysis, and litigation strategy.


* Conduct legal research and prepare legal opinions, memoranda, and documents.


* Provide management with timely updates on significant matters, including law changes, umbrella claims, appeals, bad faith claims, and files with reserves above their individual authority levels.


* Recommend, develop, and conduct training sessions for claims associates.


* Draft and review technical claims memoranda and other materials to keep line associates informed of new law and procedures affecting claims and the company.


* Assist and review in the preparation of insurance policy forms, endorsements, and amendments.


* Complete and review projects and other assignments, as assigned.



Basic Qualifications:

* Must be able to communicate in a professional manner in person, via telephone and written correspondence/email.


* Must be able to document files in a clear, concise, professional written manner, to be understood by customers, clients, co-workers and other employees of the organization.


* Must be able to follow complex instructions, resolve conflicts or facilitate conflict resolution, and have strong organization/priority setting and multi-tasking skills.


* Must be able to work both independently and in a team environment.


* Must be able to handle a substantial volume of work and to work under pressure with multiple/shifting deadlines.


* Must be able to learn and apply large amounts of technical and procedural information.


* Must be able to travel as required, including but not limited, to attend trainings, meetings, and conferences.


* Must have the following education and experience:
* Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school.


* Licensed in good standing to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.


* Meet and maintain licensing requirements including mandatory Continuing Legal Education (CLE) requirements, where applicable.


* Minimum 3-5 years relevant experience in the areas of personal injury and insurance claims and litigation.


* Preferred litigation experience, including taking and defending depositions and making court appearances.





Location: Hybrid - This position will require working onsite 2-3 days working onsite
