Position Title: Youth Service Supervisor FLSA: Non-Exempt

Reports To: Superintendent of Detention

General Purpose:

The Youth Service Supervisor is responsible for the everyday operation of the juvenile detention center. The employee is responsible for the safety and security of each resident in the juvenile detention center. The employee is expected to enforce all policies and procedures at all time. The employee is expected to exercise supervision of detention employees, work with some degree of independence and reports directly to the Superintendent on duty.

Primary Responsibilities:

* Performs a variety of basic maintenance, reconstruction/remodeling and repair services as assigned.
* Performs a variety of ground maintenance tasks as assigned.
* Completes work orders and accepts verbal instructions from the Facilities Management supervisory staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

* Coordinates the daily living activities of the residents ensuring all policies and procedures are followed
* Initiates each day's activities by waking residents and supervising established daily routines.
* Supervises household chores demonstrating proper techniques and offering assistance.
* Dispenses medications following policy and procedures.
* Monitors residents as they sleep on a quarter hour basis.


* Adheres to procedures for documentation and training
* Writes shift notes, progress notes, residents daily point sheets, and other documentation per program guidelines.
* Attends staff meetings.
* Attend in-service education sessions and required classes for continuing education.
* Testifies in court as necessary.


* Demonstrates effective communication
* Develops effective rapport with residents.
* Utilizes and teaches residents proper problem solving techniques.
* Utilizes and teaches residents conflict resolution skills.


* Assign tasks as needed to employees
* Assist or lead in physical interventions
* Train staff on duties and reprimand when necessary
* On-call duties when assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

* Knowledge of department policies and procedures
* Familiarity with Juvenile Court and procedures
* Knowledge of statutes and laws regarding juvenile detention
* Knowledge of personal computers and software
* Ability to effectively meet and deal with the public and clients.
* Ability to work cooperatively with members of the team providing quality services as needed.
* Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing with staff, parents, and residents.
* Must be able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
* Ability to safely carry out assigned tasks, duties and responsibilities independently.
* Ability to maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include, walking long distances, climbing, bending, standing and sitting for extended periods of time, lifting up to 50 pounds and operating assigned equipment.
* Ability to pass a drug-screening test.
* Ability to handle detailed and stressful situations in an appropriate manner.

Minimum Qualifications:

* Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice Administration, Criminology, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, related field or related work experience
* Must have a valid driver's license and liability insurance.

Minimum ADA and Physical/Mental Requirements:

* Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions and communicate effectively on the telephone and in person.
* Sufficient vision or other powers of observation, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to comprehend written work instructions and review, evaluate, and prepare a variety of written/typed documents and text materials.
* Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to operate standard custodial equipment. Employee should also be able to operate standard office equipment and personal computers.
* Sufficient personal mobility, flexibility, and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to lift up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, bend, twist, squat, and kneel in order to perform cleaning functions. Employee should also be able to sit and work at a computer keyboard and work in an office environment.
* Legally licensed and insured to drive a motor vehicle and the ability to drive a motor vehicle under normal and inclement weather situations.

Work Environment:

* Work is performed in a detention setting. The position may require travel to other locations for training.
