Shift: Full-Time, 36/hrs per week, 7p-7a

The Post Trauma unit is a 52 bed unit divided into 9 stepdown beds and 43 Med/Surg beds. We treat a wide variety of patients with varying levels of acuity including traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, amputations, penetrating/blunt trauma and much more. The post trauma unit offers a wide range of learning and new skill sets in a faced paced environment.

The Collaborative Care Model is an innovative new strategy dedicated to making sure that the Post Trauma Unit has the right resources at the right place for our patients in a way that can be easily modified it to the patient's unique needs. In this model, a collaborative team made up of a Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, and Care Team Associate will be assigned to a certain number of patients. In addition to those primary roles, there will also be additional support staff of a direct care pharmacist, a mobility tech, a phlebotomist, and an EVS (Environmental Services) attendant. This model puts all the right people in all the right places to give the best care we can to our patients.

Elevate your career with OU Health's LPN to BSN Degree Accelerator program through the University of Oklahoma College of Nursing, designed to empower Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) to seamlessly transition to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. We shoulder the financial responsibility, covering costs for LPNs in the LPN to BSN RN program, which offers asynchronous classes, Oklahoma-based clinical rotations, and internet-based coursework to accommodate working nurses. This flexible hybrid program, spanning 60 credit hours, blends 30 credit hours from advanced standing examination and 30 from program enrollment, providing an accessible pathway for LPNs to enhance their education and professional growth within the nursing field.

General Description:

Under limited administrative direction, supervises nursing staff and provides expert nursing care to patients with health problems ranging from complex to multi-complex.

Essential Responsibilities:

Responsibilities listed in this section are core to the position. Inability to perform these responsibilities with or without an accommodation may result in disqualification from the position.
  • Supervises nursing staff on a shift and ensures safe and effective nursing care is provided to assigned patients.
  • Ensures the oncoming shift has adequate nursing personnel to meet identified patient care needs; arranges for staff to work overtime shifts for personnel shortages based on minimum staffing requirements; assists in the development of monthly personnel schedules.
  • Assists in determining work assignments based on nursing resources and identified patient care needs.
  • Assists with revision of policies and procedures.
  • Evaluates, documents and counsels staff on a designated shift regarding job requirements and work performance; assists with employee evaluations and recommends appropriate personnel actions.
  • Conducts meetings with staff on a designated shift to discuss patient care and unit concerns.
  • Ensures educational offerings and experiences are available to staff.
  • Develops quality assurance indicators.
  • If pertinent to the area, will be responsible for updating operating room procedure cards for specialty areas.
  • Ensures orientation of new employees to a unit.
  • Monitors productivity targets established by the department.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Associate's Degree in Nursing required.

Experience: 1.5 years' experience as a Registered Nurse in an acute care setting which includes at least 6 months charge experience.

License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s) Required: Current RN License issued by the Oklahoma State Board of Nursing, or a current multistate compact RN License (eNLC). Current Basic Life Support issued by the American Heart Association required upon hire. ACLS (American Heart Association) required within 3 months of hire.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of nursing theory, practices, techniques, procedures and standards plus the principles of supervision. Skill in planning and organizing nursing care, applying advanced nursing clinical skills, maintaining records and charts, preparing written reports and in maintaining effective working relationships with others.
