Position Summary

A Polysomnographic Technologist III works under the general supervision of the medical director to provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of patients with sleep disorders including in-center and out-of-center sleep testing, diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, comprehensive patient care and direct patient education. A Polysomnographic Technologist III is able to perform the duties defined and is able to provide oversight of other sleep center staff, as assigned.

Responsibilities

General duties.

Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide age specific care in the treatment, assessment, and education of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. Comply with HIPAA, Safety, Quality and Infection Control policies. Perform routine equipment care, maintenance, trouble shooting and inventory evaluation. Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication, computer skills, social skills, customer service skills, critical thinking skills, teamwork skills and the ability to follow direction and work with minimal supervision. Serve as a clinical coach to new employees, mentor to students, travelers, etc. Comply with professional standards of conduct.

Sleep Studies and Clinical Core.

Review patient information to identify specific needs. Determine final testing parameters in conjunction with ordering provider and/or medical director and Sleep Center protocols. Review patient questionnaires, medication list and allergies. Verify medical order(s). Verify patient identification, collect and review documents, obtain consents and vital signs. Explain procedure and orient patient/family for either in-center testing, out-of-center testing or clinic procedures. Select appropriate equipment and calibrate for testing to determine proper functioning. Apply electrodes and sensors according to standard of practice. Perform routine positive airway pressure (PAP) interface fitting and desensitization. Collect urine specimens if ordered for testing.

Perform Sleep Studies that may include, but are not limited to, diagnostic polysomnography, multiple sleep latency testing, maintenance of wakefulness testing, parasomnia studies, positive airway pressure titration, dental device titration, hypoglossal stimulation titration, oxygen titration, and CO2 monitoring to ensure collection of high quality and appropriate data. Perform physiologic calibrations to ensure quality signals and make required adjustments. Follow "lights out" procedures to establish and document baseline values (such as body position, oxyhemoglobin saturation, respiratory and heart rates, etc.). Perform data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing to ensure signals are artifact-free. Identify, correct and document artifact. Document routine observations, including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure, and other significant events in order to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results. Implement appropriate interventions when necessary. Score sleep/wake stages and clinical events by utilizing AASM scoring standards. Follow "lights on" procedures to verify integrity of collected data and complete the data collection process. Generate accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical event data. Archive collected data. Demonstrate adherence to cleaning and disinfection procedures for in-center testing.

Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to perform ambulatory monitoring equipment preparation and data download, including actigraphy if available. Perform patient education and instruction appropriate for out-of- center sleep testing (OCST). Demonstrate adherence to cleaning and disinfection procedures for ambulatory monitoring devices. Demonstrate adherence to AASM scoring parameters for OCST; identify artifact, inadequate signals and study failures and generate an accurate report.

Additional Knowledge and Skills

Demonstrate knowledge of emergency procedures for patient care and environmental safety. Provide patient and community education related to sleep medicine. Assist the medical director/providers and/or manager in all aspects of Sleep Center operations.

Minimum Requirements

Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.

High School plus 2 years or more of formal training or Associates Degree in Polysomnography (Sleep Technology) is required.

Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) with the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists and Registered as RPSGT with North Carolina Medical Board.

6 to 10 years of experience as a Polysomnographic Technologist.
