Description

DEFINITION

The Registered Nurse is responsible for assisting in the implementation of health and health education services, assisting in the coordination of daily operations in the Health Center, and providing nursing care to the campus community.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Supervision is received by the Program Manager for Health Services.

Provides work direction to lower-level staff and student workers.

Work Schedule

Not to exceed 14 hours per week, as needed.

May include evenings and weekends.

Examples of Duties

Provides health information, direction, and counseling to patients based on their specific injury, illness, or concern and physician's recommendations to remediate problems. Distributes printed materials and other resources and provides referrals to other community and health resources and professionals as applicable.

Assesses patients by taking vital signs, gathering case history, determining mental status, obtaining other relevant information, and documenting appropriate in the patients' charts.

Assists the doctor with office hours by scheduling patient appointments and preparing patients for the visit, including performing general patient assessments.

Maintains examination rooms for patient visits by ensuring they have been properly cleaned and sanitized and all supplies and equipment are sanitized, organized and adequately stocked.

Prepares and maintains confidential medical records by documenting medical information, condition, treatment, advice, and referrals on medical charts and organizing the files and information to facilitate retrieval.

Collects and analyzes patient data to identify trends and calculate relevant statistics for regular reporting (e.g., services, usage, accident reports, insurance claims, etc.)

Administers injections for vaccines (e.g., MMR, Tdap, Influenza, etc.) monitors for adverse reactions, and follows-up as necessary.

Performs routine screening and laboratory tests for patients (e.g., dipstick urinalysis, Mantoux Skin Tests for Tuberculosis, pregnancy tests, Rapid Strep A Tests, glucose finger sticks, hearing screening, height and weight assessments, etc.) and notifies the patient or appropriate clinician of the results.

Treats wounds by performing appropriate first aid and dressings as determined by the nature of the injury or condition.

Provides crisis intervention by assessing the patient and situation and involving the Mental Health Counselor, Health Center Program Manager, and/or Campus Police as necessary to resolve the situation and treat patients.

Responds to on-campus emergencies to assist Campus Police in providing first-aid and conveying relevant information to paramedics.

Administers first-aid care for injured persons triaging based on severity, applying treatments where possible, providing appropriate referrals, and contacting paramedics or Campus Police as necessary.

Contacts and/or meets with patients as necessary to monitor progress and compliance with care plans and evaluate and deliver test results.

Maintains inventory of current medical and surgical supplies, ordering medications, antibiotics, and other supplies as necessary and safely discarding outdated products on a monthly basis.

Assists the Health Services Program Manager in updating nursing and office policies and procedures, as necessary to ensure needs are met efficiently and in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

Creates and maintains handouts on health-related topics for Health Center patients and visitors.

Serves as a technical resource to personnel, patients, and others concerning nursing functions, activities, and related services by responding to inquiries and providing information concerning related laws, rules, regulations, practices, and procedures.

Coordinates health education events for the campus community, working with the Program Manager and Counselor to create, organize, schedule, and deliver programs.

Participates in the hiring and orientation of new employees.

Provides work direction to temporary, lower-level, and student workers.

Performs related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:

Current nursing practices, procedures, techniques, and equipment.

Accepted methods and principles of personal hygiene, health maintenance, and disease prevention.

Symptoms, treatment, and therapeutic plans for common illnesses, injuries, and mental health crises.

State and federal laws governing nursing practices and procedures.

Proper sanitization techniques for medical supplies and equipment.

Community resources for health promotion, education, and care.

Standard screening and laboratory tests (e.g., dipstick urinalysis, Rapid Strep A Test, tuberculosis tests, etc.) and safe laboratory techniques.

Modern medical terminology, equipment, and diagnostic methods and techniques.

Principles and techniques of performing standard and emergency healthcare and nursing assessments.

Accepted techniques for diagnostic testing (e.g., blood pressure, blood glucose, tuberculosis, pregnancy, vital signs, etc.).

Use and side effects of standard medications.

Communicable diseases, including their symptoms, prevention, treatment, control, and precautions.

Wound treatment including appropriate first aid and dressings.

Safety precautions and procedures for providing medical care.

First Aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Medical record keeping techniques.

Principles and processes for providing customer and personal services.

Ability to:

Assure compliance with established federal, state, and district policies, procedures, laws, and regulations related to the health and medical care of community college students.

Maintain organized and accurate medical records and files.

Maintain confidentiality of District files and records.

Operate standard office equipment (e.g., personal computer, copier, fax machine, etc.).

Use word processing, spreadsheet, and database software to create documents and analyze data.

Clean and sanitize exam rooms and medical supplies and equipment.

Screen patients for medical conditions including performing routine tests and interpreting results (e.g., tuberculosis, blood glucose, pregnancy, throat cultures, etc.) and assessing vital signs (e.g., pulse, blood pressure, etc.).

Provide care for wounds including performing irrigations and applying dressings.

Administer injections for vaccines.

Identify health and medical needs and recommend appropriate care and services.

Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.

Respond appropriately to medical emergencies.

Administer first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Communicate concisely and effectively orally and in writing.

Prepare clear, concise, and accurate reports, correspondence, and other written materials.

Counsel and provide health related information to patients.

Exercise tact and diplomacy in dealing with sensitive, complex, and confidential issues and patient situations.

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, employees and the public.

Perform calmly and efficiently in an emergency.

Analyze data using general statistics to identify trends and meet reporting requirements.

Maintain inventory of supplies, materials, and equipment.

Provide work direction to temporary, lower-level, and student workers.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Minimum Qualifications:

Current California Registered Nurse License. Must meet standards of Nursing Practice Acts.

Current CPR provider card (American Red Cross or American Heart Association).

Two years of progressively responsible public health or industrial nursing experience within the past five years.
