Position Details:
- These LPNs are the main school nurses in the school
- Must have active VA LPN License
- The RN Public Health Nurses will be floating and available if needed
- Specifically assigned to 1 school ONLY
- They will follow the school calendar as always
- Main duties: support students who are sick and injures, administer medications during the day, and respond to any health-related emergencies
- NEXT orientation: August 26th
- Start Date at Assigned School: September 2nd
- Elementary School Hours: 8:30am - 3:30pm OR 9:15am - 4:15pm
- Middle School Hours: 7:15am - 2:15pm
- High School Hours: 8:00am-3:00pm
School Nurse Job Duties:
- Employee's duties to include, but are not limited to:
- Administer medications to students during school hours.
- Apply first aid as needed.
- Execute written doctor's orders relating to nursing care of students.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation regarding medication administration and the APTS Medication Program.
- Coordinate with parents the re-supply of medications given at school.
- Supervise Medication Trained personnel and provide training as necessary.
- Observe, assess, and recommend intervention for students and staff that present with symptoms of illness or injury, or ongoing chronic medical conditions.
- Coordinate and communicate decisions regarding sending students home due to illness.
- Maintain contact and share information with parents of students regarding health and medication issues.
- Maintain and coordinate clinic supplies for school between campuses.
- Provide instruction, health information, and training to staff relating to pertinent medical needs of the students and staff at APTS.
- Develop health assessment tools for monitoring students' health.
- Provide instruction on Family Life Education as needed.
- Obtain continuing education for current information and practices relevant to school population.
- Administer CPR/First Aid training as necessary.
- Maintain a professional presentation and demeanor at all times.
- Attend and participate in APTS safety meetings.
- Develop and deliver pre-service and ongoing in-services on general health and medical issues to APTS employees.
- Follow any other instructions and perform any other duties, as may be required by supervisor.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the Nursing Process (assessment, analyzing, outcome identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation) in order to promote and protect the optimal health status of students
- Knowledge of all state and local laws pertaining to health and social issues and adheres to legal and ethical standards regarding the scope of the school nursing practice
- Knowledge and awareness of community health and social service resources, and ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with students, parents, staff, administrators and other professional agencies in both written and oral form
- Knowledge of child development and growth, community and family dynamics, current trends in school health, wellness education, and disease prevention
- Knowledge and skills in medication administration and specialized health care and procedures
- Utilize the computer in health-related searches, email communication, data collection, and formation of reports
- Ability to exercise good judgment and manage time well while participating cooperatively in providing school health services to students in a culturally sensitive manner
- Demonstrate an ability to work with math concepts, organize data, and problem solve

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Specific hearing abilities required by this job include the ability to hear the spoken word at 20 feet with back turned. The employee must be able to provide physical crisis management. The employee will occasionally lift and/or move 50 pounds or more with or without assistance.
Qualifications:
Must be a Licensed Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse
Must be CPR/AED/First Aid certified, Instructor certification a plus
