Job Summary: The Respiratory Therapist (RT) is a professional caregiver who is accountable for performing safe and effective respiratory care in the Critical Care areas as well as the general floors. The nature of the RT's job is to assess the status of patients, and to plan, implement, evaluate, monitor, and document respiratory interventions. The RT exercises broad independent clinical judgment in association with established protocols to make recommendations to Nursing and Medical staff. The RT exemplifies the IRMC mission, vision and values, and acts in accordance with IRMC policies and procedures to ensure that quality care is provided.

Skills required: Must have effective inter-personal and communication skills to interact with patients, families, and members of the IRMC organization. Sound clinical judgment and decision-making skills necessary to function in an independent environment. Must possess ability to convey directions and interact with patients with multiple age-specific needs.

Minimum Education Required: Graduate of an AMA / JRCRCE accredited therapist program; AS degree or BS in Respiratory Care.

Minimum Experience Required: Six to twelve months of experience on this job or related jobs are necessary before most aspects of this job are performed satisfactorily; although, persons without experience may be employed. One year Critical Care experience preferred.

Licensure/Certification Required: Must be credentialed as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC). Registry-eligible candidates must pass the national exam within six months of employment for new hires or current employee. Must possess a current RCP license in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and forward evidence of such on a bi-annual basis. BLS certified required (or obtain within one month of hire). ACLS preferred. *If you were credentialed by the NBRC on or after July 1, 2002, you must participate in the Continuing Competency Program to maintain your NBRC credentials. Credentials awarded prior to July 1, 2002 are not subject to the Continuing Competency Program.
