Essential Duties

1. Carries out research within the scope of the established protocol. Adheres to all human subjects regulations as defined by Yale University and the federal government that pertain to research studies. 2. Proficient in statistical software used for economics and health policy research (particularly Stata). Reports on status of research activities. Plans data collection and statistical programming activities to provide investigator with project time frames. Works as a member of a research team to provide the appropriate statistical input in the design, execution, and analysis of studies. 3. Processes large amounts of data for econometric analyses and modeling, using computers. Ensures the integrity of datasets used in analyses through development of essential data cleaning and checks, and data back-ups. 4. Independently assembles new policy and price datasets (e.g., from online sources, Freedom of Information Act Requests, etc.) for specified projects, along with clear source documentation and data descriptions. Develops original applications for restricted data access where needed. 5. Analyzes data in Stata using econometric techniques to identify causal effects. Generates corresponding tables and figures for presentation and publication. Applies economic insights in interpreting results. 6. Documents procedures for data collection and coding. Prepares reports presenting statistical methods, empirical results, and interpretation. 7. Writes and edits material for publication and presentation, as well as reports on status of research activities. 8. Develops original HIC/IRB submissions. Based on knowledge of science and research goals, collaborates with PI on major revisions and contributes to scientific protocols. Plans and implements changes when needed. 9. Performs additional functions incidental to research activities.

Required Education and Experience

Master's Degree in Economics, Health Policy and 2 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Position Focus:

Research Associate needed to execute quasi-experimental analyses to inform tobacco control and addiction policy, using Stata. Working under the direction of Dr. Abigail Friedman, the Research Associate will execute difference-in-differences, event study, and other quasi-experimental research designs to analyze policies' effects on addictive behaviors, particularly tobacco/nicotine and cannabis use. Responsibilities include managing and maintaining associated policy databases, executing data analyses for funded projects with senior faculty's guidance, generating tabular and graphical outputs, and contributing to presentations and manuscripts at the level of a coauthor. The successful candidate will have experience executing difference-in-differences analyses and the capacity to read and understand new articles in econometrics in order to follow the evolving literature on these methods.

Essential Duties include: Code and carry out statistical analyses to estimate policies' causal effects in collaboration with associated faculty. Generate tables and figures to present results, assumption tests, and other output. Convert parameters into appropriate units as needed. Lead policy database development, maintenance, and source documentation. Ensure compliance with relevant funder policies (e.g., related to data sharing). Oversee proper authorization for IRB approvals, data use agreements, and restricted data access. Secure release of information from restricted data repositories according to regulatory policy. Attend weekly team meetings to discuss team and project-related activities, issues, changes, communications, and updates. Coordinate across research team members and sites to ensure timely completion of deliverables. Follow literature on new quasi-experimental methods and assumption tests required for causal analysis. Incorporate new methods into projects where relevant.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Master's Degree in economics, health policy or public policy with an economics concentration, or in a related field, with 2 years research experience. Proficient in Stata. Demonstrated interest in and experience studying tobacco/nicotine or addiction policy is ideal but not required.
