POSITION: Behavioral Support Specialist
REPORTS TO: Building Principal/Assistant Building Principal or Designee
EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Full-Time, 183 Days, Master Agreement, FLSA Exempt

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's and/or Master's Degree in his/her area of Instruction/Education
  • Valid Ohio Certification/Licensure by the State of Ohio, Department of Education to instruct in his/her area of professional competency and/or assignment
  • Valid Ohio Driver's License
  • Must pass criminal background check

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Provides professional behavioral analyst services to students in an effort to conduct behavioral assessments, analyze data, interprets results, design behavior interventions and provide training and support to personnel. Provides services in accordance with the most current industry and District policies, procedures, ethical standards and best practices. Works with instructional staff and parents/guardians to address individualized learning needs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Use appropriate assessment instruments and data to develop and implement teaching programs that reflect behavioral and other outcomes and objectives identified in the IEP.
  • Provide training and consultation to teachers and paraprofessionals through observations, meetings, coaching and other methods based on data.
  • Participate in IEP Team meetings, classroom observations and provide feedback on behavioral assessments and intervention methods/strategies.
  • Promotes wellness and resilience by reinforcing communication and social skills, problem solving, anger management, self-regulation, self-determination, and optimism.
  • Consults and provide parent and staff training to support intervention plans at school and in the home and community.
  • Serves as a liaison between school and other agencies.
  • Coordinate with IEP team members and related service personnel to ensure all aspects of the behavioral support plan is addressed thoroughly.
  • Implements school building prevention programs that help maintain positive school climates that are conducive to learning. Recommends modifications of the school program for students who require accommodations.
  • Promotes school policies and practices that ensure the safety of all students by reducing school violence, bullying, and harassment Promptly engages District and/or school building staff when there is reason to suspect or reasonably believe that a student is at risk or in danger.
  • Participates as a member of the multidisciplinary team in the identification, evaluation, and placement of students into exceptional education programs. May write a component of the Individual Education Plan.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with students' families and public & private health agencies to enhance the health and wellness of the school climate.
  • Collects and analyzes data to guide program direction and emphasis.
  • Assists instructional staff, parents/guardians, and other relevant stakeholders in interpreting and understanding student data.
  • Provides appropriate information to District and building staff regarding behavioral services.
  • Promotes school behavioral services to District staff, students, parents/guardians, and community stakeholders.
  • Participates in professional development activities to improve knowledge and skills. Attends industry conferences and meetings to remain abreast of industry best practices and updates that are applicable to the District.
  • Collaborates with internal and external partners on special projects as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE OF: Board policies and procedures, building policies and procedures, student code of conduct, community resource agencies, emergency preparedness drills, public relations, federal and state reporting, and records management.

ABILITY TO: Interpret policies, procedures and regulations, follow instructions, communicate effectively, prepare, maintain, and file accurate and concise reports, collect data, recognize individual differences, lift a moderate amount of weight, develop a rapport with students, staff, co-workers, administration and the public.

ADDITIONAL WORKING CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT:

OCCASIONAL: Exposure to blood, bodily fluids and tissue, lifting (10-20 pounds) of supplies and materials. Duties may require exposure to adverse weather conditions and seasonal temperature extremes. Exposure to the following situations may range from remote to frequent based on circumstances and factors that may not be predictable. Potential for exposure to blood-borne pathogens and communicable diseases. Potential for interaction with disruptive and/or unruly individuals.

PERIODIC: Exposure to loud noise, extreme temperatures from program environment, irritating and hazardous chemicals, fumes, and unruly children and adults. Duties may require operating and/or riding in a vehicle. Duties may require traveling to meetings and work assignments. Duties may require prolonged use of a computer keyboard and monitor. Duties may require working extended hours. Duties may require working under time constraints to meet deadlines.

FREQUENT: Prolonged periods of standing and lifting (10-20 pounds) of supplies and materials. Bending, stooping and reaching for items. Follow all Board safety rules and procedures. Participate in the school safety training when requested. Potential for interaction with disruptive and/or unruly individuals.
