Job Summary: Performs two dimensional (2-D), three dimensional (3-D), or four (4-D) dimensional ultrasonic recordings of internal organs for the diagnosis of disease and study of the malfunction of organs. Participates in CQI activities.

RELATED FUNCTIONS:
  1. Performs clinical assessment and diagnostic sonography examinations.
  2. Perform invasive ultrasound procedures, doppler vascular examinations, deep abdominal studies and color-flow ultrasound as required.
  3. Selects appropriate equipment for use in ultrasound setup, following exam specifications.
  4. Explains the test to the patient. Instructs and assists the patient in assuming the physical position for examination.
  5. Able to assess patient pain interfering with imaging procedure; makes appropriate physician contact for intervention.
  6. Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  7. Supports and maintains a culture of safety and quality.
  8. Selects a transducer and adjusts the equipment controls according to the organ to be examined, the depth of field and other specifications of test.
  9. Enters test data and patient information into computer of ultrasound equipment to maintain record of test results.
  10. Moves transducer, by hand, over specified area of the body and observes sound wave display screen to monitor quality of ultrasonic pattern produced.
  11. Produces images of internal organs and records diagnostic data electronically or strip print out utilizing the facility's PAC system for storing and retrieving images.
  12. Obtains permanent record of internal examination by photographing images of organs shown on the display module or removing the strip printout.
  13. Evaluates technical quality of images to obtain representative images of pathogenic conditions.
  14. Discusses test results with supervisor or attending physician.
  15. Performs all quality control checks, as prescribed.
  16. Maintains records of ultrasound films taken, archiving and de-archiving data as required; calculates, compiles and records data from numerical readings on patient's medical record and related documents.
  17. Understands and practices proper use of all equipment; follows manufacturer's instructions for use.
  18. Calibrates, cleans and performs routine maintenance on equipment to ensure proper functioning; cleans and sterilizes instruments, supplies and equipment; stocks and replenish supplies as needed.
  19. Documentation in the electronic health record meets current standards and hospital policy.
  20. Provides care appropriate to condition and age of the patient, including pediatric, geriatric and general population.
  21. Maintains accurate QC logs, service records, etc.

  24. Responsible for maintaining radiation protection/safety as it relates to patients, staff and equipment.
  25. Maintains appropriate patient and departmental records.
  26. Maintains an open communication with members of the medical staff, administration and ancillary personnel/other departments.
  27. Maintain work area in a safe, clean and orderly condition.
  28. Follow standard and prescribed safety regulations.
  29. Respond to all facility emergency codes.
  30. Attend facility-sponsored training in Blood Borne pathogens, Fire Safety, Right to Know and Chemical Hygiene.
  31. Participates in in-service training/educational programs.
  32. Maintains professional certifications as necessary for job.
  33. Pursues continuing education in professional practice and management skills.
  34. Maintains a professional appearance and behavior at all times.
  35. Maintain the confidentiality and security of all date and information relating to the facility, medical staff and patients.
  36. Maintain patient safety and patient care as a top priority.
  37. Abide by all relevant facility policies and procedures.
  38. Report any violation of OSHA Regulations to supervisor.
  39. Report any quality improvement patient's safety issues to the appropriate committee.
  40. Report defective materials, faulty operations of equipment and unusual matters to supervisor and other appropriate personnel.
  41. Notify ordering Physicians of any problem or delays in procedure or performance of equipment.

REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE:

High School Diploma or equivalent.

Competency in professional practice and management skills as appropriate

Graduate of Registry approved ultrasound program or equivalent experience Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC)

Graduate of AMA approved Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program or equivalent experience according to Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC)

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:

Certification by American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography or equivalent

Valid state credential, if applicable.

INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:

Relates cooperatively and constructively with all patients, guests, families, physicians, peers and all health care members as well as anyone the employee comes in contact with during the course of daily activities.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Sufficient mobility and strength to ambulate, position, transfer patients. Marked amount of walking, standing, reaching, pulling, pushing, stooping and kneeling. Minimal lifting requirements of 40 to 50 pounds.

VERBAL AND/OR COMMUNICATION SKILLS:

Must be able to read, write, and speak the English language.

ESSENTIAL TECHNICAL/MOTOR SKILLS:

Precise hand-eye coordination and finger dexterity.

ESSENTIAL MENTAL ABILITIES:

Knowledgeable and competent to perform essential functions.

ESSENTIAL SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to visually and audibly perform all essential functions.
