Position Summary

The Registered Sleep Technologist performs comprehensive polysomnographic testing, associated interventions and outcomes assessments as assigned by clinical manager. Sleep tests include but are not limited to the following Sleep Medicine procedures: PSGs (polysomnograms), MSLTs (multiple sleep latency tests), MWTs (Multiple Wakefulness Tests) and Seizure Montage applications. Interventions to include the application of supplemental oxygen and positive airway pressure per departmental protocol and under the direction of the Sleep Services Clinical Manager and Medical Director. PAP applications to include CPAP, Bi-level PAP, iVAPs and ASV. In addition to testing, the RPSGT may be required to provide oversight and training of other clinical staff and assist clinical manager with quality assurance and outcomes data management.

Minimum Requirements

Education

* High School Graduate or Equivalent
* Successful completion of an accredited educational program leading to a certificate or associate degree with an emphasis in sleep technology.

OR

* Successful completion of a sleep technology program associated with a state licensed and/or a nationally accredited educational facility or equivalent experience and documented proficiency for all competencies required of a sleep technologist.

Experience

* (1) year or more.

License/Registration/Certifications

* Holds the BRPT's Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) credential and/or AARC's Sleep Disorders Specialist (SDS) credential.
* Must have and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

Core Job Responsibilities

* Follow procedural protocols [such as Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT), parasomnias, PAP, and oxygen titration, etc.] to ensure collection of appropriate data.
* Perform appropriate physiological calibrations to ensure proper signals and make required adjustments.
* Follow "lights out" procedures to establish and document baseline values (such as body position, oxyhemoglobin saturation, respiratory and heart rates, etc.).
* Perform data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact-free. Identify, correct and document artifact.
* Document routine observations, including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure, and other significant events in routine equipment care and maintenance and inventory evaluation.
* Demonstrate computer skills appropriate for the position.
* Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills.
* Demonstrate critical thinking and ability to work with minimal supervision.
* Follow HIPAA policies to maintain the privacy and security of patient information.
* Demonstrate ability to follow direction.
* Respond to sleep patients' procedural-related inquiries by providing appropriate information.
* Provide patient education utilizing sleep center specific protocols.
* Adhere to sleep center policies related to quality assurance.
* Evaluate sleep study related equipment and inventory.
* Review and evaluate sleep studies and provide feedback to staff.
* Demonstrate the ability to analyze complex situations and apply policy.
* Assist the medical director and/or manager in all aspects of sleep center operations
* Ensures that appropriate plan of care is identified and implemented within the scope of care of the sleep service.
* Must be in good physical condition and be able to meet the stress and demands of an active position.
* Must always be able to maintain vigilance during study to monitor patient and document and intervene as appropriate.
* Must be able to withstand many long hours of standing, bending, stooping and sitting.
* Requires considerable degrees of walking and lifting in transporting equipment/patients from department to patient's room.
* Mental stress results from working closely with critically ill patients.
* Considerable independent judgment and critical thinking skills required.
* Requires extreme attention to detail to prevent loss of life or limb.
* Average manual dexterity to reach, manipulate, move etc. equipment and hearing and vision, within orcorrectable to normal range. Must be able to push / pull force up to 55 pounds.
* Must be able to read, write, and speak English fluently.
* Must be able to establish and maintain effective and respectful working relationships with customers.
* Must be able to respond calmly and efficiently in a crisis situation.
* Perform care in a manner that supports the Standards of Behavior of the organization.
