Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Director of Pharmacy, is responsible at each hospital for assisting with the management of controlled substance acquisition, storage and distribution. Also responsible for the oversight of the collection and review of controlled substance data to prevent and identify drug diversion and ensures that standard reporting processes for controlled substances are in place, pursuant to DEA and WV Board of Pharmacy requirements. Manages the Automated Dispensing hardware and assists with implementation of new automated dispensing hardware and software. Assists with or performs tasks so that pharmacists may focus on improving patient care and therapeutic outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Is responsible for the use of standard reporting processes for controlled substances within each pharmacy that will provide tracking and required legal documentation. • Conducts regular drug diversion audits. • Educates new employees on controlled substance processes and automated dispensing processes. • Assist with procedure development for controlled substances and automated dispensing. • Uses Electronic Medical Record to conduct drug administration audits. • Enter physician orders into the pharmacy information system, including the gathering and verifying patient demographic data to complete the patient's medication profile. • Communicate all drug interactions encountered to the pharmacist while electronically processing the prescription. • Under the supervision of a pharmacist, prepare patient specific medication orders for dispensing, utilizing equipment the department has to support the process Under the supervision of a pharmacist, prepare sterile products utilizing appropriate sterile technique (acute care only). • Under the supervision of a pharmacist, re-package medications and maintain the quality documentation records associated with the process. • Independently stock pharmacy supplies ("floor stock") in patient care areas. • Manage the controlled substance processes of the pharmacy under the supervision of a pharmacist. • Manage phone calls into the department. • Calls which require professional judgement should be routed to a pharmacist. Calls which do not require the professional judgement of a pharmacist should be attempted to be resolved by the technician. • Prepare ointments, creams, and solutions (topical, oral, rectal) using appropriate departmental procedures. • Complete quality monitoring for medications in patient care areas throughout the hospital. • Perform the basic functions of drug purchasing, and inventory control including inventory re-stock levels, check in medications shipments, retrieving medications from storage areas, billing, filing of invoices and prescriptions.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Patient Group Knowledge (Only applies to positions with direct patient contact) The employee must possess/obtain (by the end of the orientation period) and demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide developmentally appropriate assessment, treatment or care as defined by the department's identified patient ages. Specifically the employee must be able to demonstrate competency in: 1) ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of patient needs; 2) knowledge of growth and development; and 3) understanding of the range of treatment needed by the patients. Competency Statement Must demonstrate competency through an initial orientation and ongoing competency validation to independently perform tasks and additional duties as specified in the job description and the unit/department specific competency checklist. Perform work in alignment with the overall mission and strategic plan of the organization. 8. Follow organizational and departmental policies and procedures, as applicable. 9. Perform related duties as assigned.

Education

• High School Diploma or GED (Required) Experience: 3 Years - Related experience
• Formalized Training (Required) Experience: 3 Years - Related experience Substitution: 1 year related experience (within 24 months) in hospital- long term may substitute for Graduate of ASHP Technician Program or hospital/military based technician training program
