Job Summary:

Under the direction of the radiologist performs a variety of routine and complex CT scanning examinations for the purpose of diagnosing abnormalities, contributing to the efficient operation of the department and continuity of patient care

Essential Functions and Duties:

Independently performs complex computerized axial tomography (CT) scanning of the abdomen, head, extremities, chest and spine. Receives order and patient, explains method of procedure, positions and enters necessary data into computer for examination. Independently performs examination after conferring with the radiologist (if necessary) to establish examination requirements. Obtains information from patient and/or patient's medical record for allergy history and laboratory renal function. Administers contrast orally and intravenously to patient. Recognizes physiological changes that may require modification of standard protocol in order to obtain adequate data that yields diagnostic useful clinical information. Maintains permanent record of scans. Shows scans to radiologist or referring physician for diagnostic evaluation. Notifies the radiologist or physician of patient scans requiring immediate attention. Makes minor adjustments to equipment such as window width and window leveling. Immediately notifies manager and equipment service personnel of equipment malfunction. Performs all required CT quality assurance testing. Performs duties as a Radiology Technologist as needed.

Position Qualifications:
  • Registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist
  • Certified to perform radiology by the Illinois Emergency Management Agency - IEMA
  • Registered CT Technologist or registry eligible
  • Certified to perform cardio-pulmonary resuscitation - BLS.
  • Minimum of 1 year CT experience preferred.

Physical Demands:

Lifting/transferring
  • Average lifting 20 pounds (case of paper). Able to transfer 50 pounds Able to lift or position clients greater than 50 pounds with assistance or assistive devices, requesting assistance is expected
  • Required in positioning and moving clients and medical equipment. Pushing required performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) (mask, gown, gloves) when required.
  • Regularly exposed to body fluids with the risk of blood borne pathogens or airborne pathogens
  • Able to sit, stand, walk or kneel for extended periods of time
  • Able to concentrate on fine detail images
  • Able see close objects and hear normal sounds with some background noises
  • Able to perform repetitive hand-eye coordinative movements

Function-Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Perform a variety of routine and complex computed tomography procedures
  • Corroborate patient's clinical history with procedure ensuring information is documented
  • Operate computed tomography equipment and accessories
  • Select appropriate program for the desired protocol
  • Position patient to best demonstrate anatomic area of interest while respecting patient ability and comfort
  • Apply principles of radiation protection when appropriate to minimize exposure to patient, self and others
  • Assume responsibility for provision of physical and psychological needs of patient during procedures
  • Verify or initiate informed consent as needed
  • Assist with interventional CT procedures and apply appropriate aseptic surgical technique as needed
  • Perform venipuncture in accordance with institutional policy
  • Prepare, identify and/ or administer contrast media oral or intravenous as prescribed by a licensed practitioner
  • Evaluate images for technical quality, manipulating display parameters and providing hard copy records ensuring proper identification is recorded
  • Maintain archival storage of digital data as appropriate
  • Initiate basic life support actions when necessary
  • Assist in maintaining patient records, respecting confidentiality
  • Perform required equipment quality assurance testing
  • Assume responsibility for control of inventory and supplies for the assigned area
  • Assume responsibility for assigned area and report equipment malfunctions
  • Observe universal precautions
  • Provide on-call coverage for ICU, Medical Surgical Unit and Emergency Department
  • Promote customer service as part of CPR ( Caring, Professionalism and Respect )
  • Knowledgeable on Medrad CT injectors and proficient in use.
