Responsibilities

The position of Corporate Counsel - Litigation will have a broad scope of responsibility assisting MSA and its global subsidiaries in managing litigation and related matters. This role will report to the Associate General Counsel - Litigation and Risk and will advise and assist on matters such as product liability and environmental litigation, insurance recovery, product safety, and emerging laws and regulations. The Corporate Counsel will help to develop and execute litigation strategy, manage outside service providers, and counsel business stakeholders on a variety of matters. The successful candidate will be able to exercise independent judgment and strategic thinking in approaching various challenges; will become a trusted advisor to the business; and will excel at identifying and implementing process improvements to support the litigation function and the Company.

Litigation

* Assist with litigation and related matters affecting the Company and its subsidiaries, with a focus on product liability and environmental claims
* Support insurance recovery efforts


* Supervise a network of outside counsel and other service providers
* Improve processes to support litigation efforts
* Aid legal team in responding to agency investigations and third-party requests for information and subpoenas

Proactive Counseling of Business Stakeholders

* Work closely with the business and provide counsel on legal issues related to product safety, litigation, and other matters
* Assist in evaluating emerging laws and regulations and guiding the Company's response
* Educate business units relating to mitigation and proactive avoidance of legal risk as needed

Information Technology Litigation Risk Support

* Refine, implement, and manage e-discovery processes and practices
* Interface with and supervise third-party vendors to design tools and improve processes that further MSA's defense efforts, increase budget transparency, and reduce expenses

Qualifications

Education (required):

* Juris Doctor
* Licensed to practice law in Pennsylvania (or other jurisdiction that would permit in-house practice in the state)

Education (preferred):

* Law Review or a top legal journal

Experience (required):

* Minimum 3 years' litigation practice experience, including management of e-discovery
* Sharp analytical skills, sound judgment, and excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate with clarity on complex topics
* Proven record of strong negotiating, organizational, and people management skills
* Proven record of influencing and building relationships
* Able to demonstrate a willingness to embrace innovative approaches to legal work, such as an understanding of legal operations, value-based fee agreements, continuous improvement principles, project management, or use of technology solutions

Experience (preferred):

* 5-7 years prior practice, although other seniority levels may be considered
* Prior practice at a top law firm
* Experience with policyholder-side insurance coverage law
* Experience with product liability, environmental, regulatory or other such matters
* Trial-team experience in state or federal court
* Judicial clerkship
