Under the supervision of the Billing Manager, the Certified Medical Coder will play a key role in reviewing and analyzing medical billing and coding for daily processing. They will review and accurately code office and hospital procedures for reimbursement. The employee will be responsible for performing annual coding audits of office visits, procedures, and surgeries

Essential Functions:
  1. Review patient documents for accuracy to include but not limited to office visits, surgical, and non-surgical procedures.
  2. Ensure proper coding on provider documentation.
  3. Verify that all codes are current and active.
  4. Report missing and/or incomplete documentation to provider and/or clinical staff.
  5. Meet daily coding production expectations.
  6. Perform accurate charge entries.
  7. Understand coding and reimbursement regulations and recognize the order in which services are billed to ensure maximum reimbursement by reading various coding and insurance newsletters and websites.
  8. Accurately post services based on global services data by applying NCCI edits, AAOC, NASS and ASSH Global Guidelines for all applicable insurance carriers.
  9. Serve as a resource regarding insurance resolutions and coding questions.
  10. Communicate changes and updates in coding requirements from insurance carriers to supervisor.
  11. Post daily receipts and correct posting errors in practice management system.
  12. Assist with external and/or internal audits as requested.
  13. Review and make corrections based on the Missing Encounter Report.
  14. Audit charges provided by hospitals/surgical centers to capture all charges for posting.
  15. Other duties as assigned.


Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to sit and/or stand for prolonged periods, work longer than eight (8) hour shifts, and to work both day/evening shifts. Work may hand dexterity as well as the need to reach, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee is required to talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus. Environmental/Working Conditions:

Work is performed in an office environment. Involves frequent contact with patients, physicians, and other healthcare personnel. Work may be stressful at times. Interaction with others is constant and interruptive. It is possible work may involve interaction with injured or sick patients.

Education: Associates and/or Bachelor's degree preferred.

Experience: Minimum of 1-year of coding experience; orthopedic experience preferred. Individuals who are planning to become certified are encouraged to apply.
