QUALIFICATIONS:Certification by Kentucky Department of Education with proper endorsement, plus responsible experience in teaching and supervision, or any equivalent combination of experience or training.

Special Education Coordinator
PRIMARY JOB GOAL:
To improve the school education experience of those students with major emotional and learning disabilities through a program of psychological diagnosis and therapy; to implement and maintain due process procedures subsequent to referrals.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Comprehensive knowledge of principles and practices of modern public school special education and the ability to apply them to the needs of the district; knowledge of the nature and effects of the impairment(s) or disability(ies) of the students they assess; knowledge of current research and theory as they relate to content, curriculum, procedures, materials, and instructional practices in the area of special education; ability to assess needs and assist in developing and implementing the IEP; ability to evaluate assessment results; ability to maintain required records and reports; ability to utilize multimedia and computer technology as appropriate; ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing; ability to develop effective working relationships with the entire school community; commitment to education reform; ability to be flexible to adjust the testing program to any unanticipated interruptions/changes; ability to travel to more than one work location in the course of the day.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
-Maintains at all times an orderly work atmosphere and keeps the Special Education Coordinator fully informed of the program's activities and problems.
-As a member of the multi-disciplinary assessment team, conducts comprehensive psycho-educational evaluations for students referred due to learning or behavioral problems.
-Integrates and interprets data through an integrated psycho-educational evaluation report on referred students.
-Interprets evaluation results to school personnel, other concerned professionals, parents, and students.
-Makes recommendations on ways to assist a student referred for evaluation.
-Serves on the School-Based Admissions and Release Committee.
-Consults on special educational needs of mentally disabled children, emotionally disturbed children, and children with learning disabilities.
-As a member of the School-Based Admissions and Release Committee, attends conferences to determine eligibility and programming for students with special needs.
-Counsels parents of children with special needs and helps arrange for services out of school including services through local universities, LifeSkills, and other agencies.
-Maintains professional relationships with personnel of community health and social welfare agencies in coordinating services and programs for children.
-Attends staff, professional, and interagency meetings.
-Assists with in-service training of school personnel, and serves as a consultant for in-service meetings for parents and teachers.
-Provides consultation services to teachers in dealing with interventions for children with learning and/or behavioral problems.
-Confers with teachers and parents whenever necessary.
-Conducts individual, group, or facilitative therapy for children whose diagnosed problems would benefit from behavior modifications.
-Maintains case records on all referred children.
-Maintains referral tracking system on referred students to meet timelines as established by policies and procedures.
-Maintains tracking system on students identified as special education for re-evaluation purposes.
-Works with school counselors on providing social skills interventions.
-Serves as a behavior management specialist for special needs students.
-Keeps abreast of new developments in the field of school psychology.
-Works with teachers and parents to ensure due process parental and child rights are adhered to and protected.
-Maintains current test and testing procedures, and maintains an inventory of such documents.
-Serves as a resource person to school/district staff.
-Provides professional development for school/district staff.
-Supports or participates in districtwide student and employee activities and social events.
-Always maintains the highest professional standards in personal conduct.
-Performs related duties and assumes other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Special Education Coordinator or the Superintendent.
