SCHOOL NURSE


Position Title: School Nurse
Reports to: Director of Health Services

Mission Statement of District:
To instruct and assist students to be self-directed learners, collaborative workers, complex thinkers, quality producers and community contributors.

Qualifications:
  1. Registered Professional Nurse (BSN or equivalent preferred)
  2. CPR Certified
  3. Hearing and Vision Technician Certified (Preferred)

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Possess effective oral and written communication skills
  • Able to comprehend and follow written and verbal instructions
  • Physically and emotionally able to perform job responsibilities
  • Skilled in the use of office computer equipment, related software applications, and other standard office machines
  • Able to gather data, compile information, prepare reports and use to improve performance
  • Able to make nursing diagnoses and medical/procedural decisions and judgments

Responsibilities and Essential Duties:
  • Participate actively in a Professional Learning Community with colleagues by:
    1. Attending staff meetings and in-service meetings as required;
    2. Creating, sharing, and analyzing data with team or departmental colleagues; and
    3. Actively engage in district, building, and team-level committees and participate in district/building initiatives.
  • Use technology, information, and other tools.
  • Demonstrate self- management and coordination skills and effectively organize a variety of materials, equipment, media, and community resources to support the instructional program, using school-approved procedures.
  • Attend student events to demonstrate genuine interest in the life of the students.
  • Serve as a role model for students and staff in demonstrating positive attitudes, appropriate attire and grooming and effective work ethic.
  • Maintain positive, cooperative, and mutually supportive relationships with the administration, instructional staff, students, parents, and representatives of resource agencies within the community.
  • Communicate regularly with parents, seeking their support and advice, so as to create a cooperative relationship to support the child.
  • Prompt arrival and complete duties in a timely manner and use full effort throughout the duration of every shift.
  • Report suspected child abuse/neglect cases as required by statute and board policy and notify immediately appropriate personnel of evidence of substance abuse, child abuse, child neglect, severe medical or social conditions, potential suicide or individuals appearing to be under the influence of alcohol, controlled substances, or anabolic steroids.
  • Work cooperatively with other school personnel and parents and students.
  • Meet with students, parents, administrators and/or consultants.
  • Maintain accurate records and complete records and reports in a timely fashion as required by law and regulation or building/department procedures or requested by the Principal or Director of Health Services or designee, including but not limited to medical forms, and accident reports.
  • Implement medical orders.
  • Maintain student discipline with a focus on student safety in accordance with Board policy.
  • Plan and conduct the health screenings and surveys and state reports as established by the Board or State of Illinois.
  • Fulfill State requirements and board policies for communicable disease control and the exclusion and readmission of pupils for reasons of health, reviewing all doctor and medical notes submitted to the school by students and parents. Provide instruction to all teachers on methods to detect the first signs of communicable disease.
  • Administer medication to students in accordance with law and Board policy.
  • Follow protocols that provide for crisis intervention for acute illness, injury and emotional disturbances.
  • Provide emergency care arising from accident and illness at school in accordance with Board policy. Make arrangements for treatment at hospitals or clinics in an emergency or when requested by the school principal.
  • Understand and follow established procedures for sanitation and hygiene in the handling and disposal of body fluids and medical waste. Ensure that all staff understand and follow established procedures.
  • Address staff annually regarding universal precautions; including bloodborne pathogens and CPR.
  • Select, arrange for purchase, and store appropriate medical supplies and equipment necessary to operate a school health office. Recommend a budget to support the health services program to the Director of Health Services.
  • Assume a leadership role in identifying students with health problems that may interfere with effective learning.
  • Work with community health agencies and resources to provide a comprehensive and coordinated health services program for the school and its students.
  • Participate as a health specialist on teams determining special services for students.
  • Plan and implement school health management protocols for children with chronic health problems.
  • Counsel students, staff, and parents concerning health issues, care, treatment, and other community health issues.
  • Understand and communicate current developments in the health field through reading of professional journals, participation in professional development, and involvement in professional organizations.
  • Complete the required clock hours of State-approved continuing professional development Recommend policies and procedures that promote a healthy school environment and a clean, safe facility. Identify and communicate to the principal any unsafe practices or conditions.
  • Maintain a safe and clean health office including the care and maintenance of all health office equipment needed to carry out job functions and responsibilities.
  • Display the highest ethical and professional behavior and standards when working with students, parents, school personnel, and other agencies associated with the school.
  • Protect confidentiality of records and information gained as part of exercising professional duties in accordance with the law and Board policies.
  • Identify problems and proactively resolve issues.
  • Complete tasks in the expected or assigned time frame without need for re-direction from supervisor.
  • Represent the district well in interactions with all stakeholders.
  • Participate in building and/or district initiatives.
  • Be knowledgeable of and adhere to the law, including the Illinois Nurse Practice Act, applicable rules, Illinois School Code, State Board of Education rules and regulations, Board of Education policies and regulations, school regulations and procedures, and contractual obligations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to sit 25-50% of the day; use hands to manipulate, handle, or feel 25-50% of the day; talk and hear 50-75% of the day; reach with hands and arms (occasionally above the shoulder) 25-50% of the day; and stand and walk 50-75% of the day. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Other physical demands of the positions include: regular bending, squatting, kneeling, twisting/turning/balancing, reaching above shoulder/outward, and typing/keyboarding.
In the work environment, the employee is regularly exposed to video display and regularly works in typical interior/office environmental conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
