Job Description

Under the supervision of the Nursing Director of Maternal Child Health the Associate Director for the neonatal, pediatric and pediatric ICU department assists in the planning, developing, organizing, implementing, evaluating and directing the day-to-day functions for Neonatal ICU, Pediatric ICU & Pediatric to support and coordinate the provision of care. S/he is responsible for 24-hour administrative, clinical operation and care coordination of the neonatal/pediatric unit service. S/he is accountable for adhering to established policies, procedures, and ensuring that standards of nursing practice are in alignment with organizational, regulatory and nationally recognized professional standards and current research.

MAJOR DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assess and evaluate employees to promote staff development

Participate in the disciplinary process to maintain professional standard and conduct Collaborate with staff development in the planning and coordination of orientation programs Act in lieu of the Director of Nursing for the Maternal Child Division, in her absence

Adhere to and actively participate in the regular review, development and/or revision of nursing practice, policies, procedures and protocols.

Ensure competency and safe maintenance of all medical devices within the sphere of responsibility

Ensure compliance and participation in internal and external required activities (example: NY State/City Collaboratives, Regional Perinatal Center Program/Activities)

Keep abreast with all aspects of Neonatal/Pediatric Nursing, current research and clinical developments.

Responsible for the appraisal of own performance, identifying training and development needs.

Promote a professional image at all times and accountable for own clinical practice.

Ensure clinical practice is in alignment with organization, professional, and regulatory standard

Serves on nursing/hospital/system committees as assigned

Assists with scheduling of staff educational programs

Participates in the evaluation of nursing practice and makes recommendations for developmental/revision of nursing standards

Attends conferences and workshops to maintain professional competence

Participate in continuous improvement programs by collaborating with members of a multidisciplinary team

Responsible for an active Quality Improvement Program, tracking patterns and trends, implementing corrective action and evaluating results.

Investigates and makes recommendations regarding incidents

Responsible for performance appraisals, hiring, retention and engagement of assigned staff

Makes timely systematic patient care rounds to objectively evaluate patient care and Nursing intervention.

Encourages cohesive and effective working relationships between medical, nursing and ancillary support staff.

Assists in scheduling of assigned nursing personnel to ensure appropriate and adequate levels of staffing on all shifts

Maintains surveillance of staffing patterns on assigned units to ensure adequate staffing distribution

Promotes staff and customer service satisfaction.

Regularly reviews medical records to assess the appropriate care of patient and the quality and appropriateness of documentation

Participate in the education and act as link assessor for nurses by acting as mentor/preceptor/role model.

Minimum Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
1. Licensed and currently registered to practice as a Professional Nurse in New York State
2. Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing, and a Master's Degree or enrollment in Master's Program in Nursing or Health Care
3. Specialty certification is a strong plus
4. Minimum of 3-4 years of clinical experience in related services
5. Leadership experience in Neonatal ICU and/or Pediatric ICU
6. Demonstrate skills in leadership management, communication, coaching, counseling, problem solving, decision making and conflict resolution
7. Knowledge of patient care and regulatory agencies (CMS, Joint Commission, DOH)
