Position Summary

The Cardiovascular Technician IV assists with the performance of cardiac catheterization procedures, utilizing advanced clinical skills and knowledge. Also assists the supervisor with the provision of leadership and staff development for the unit.

Responsibilities

1. PROVIDES AGE SPECIFIC PATIENT CARE ACCORDING TO UNIT SCOPE OF SERVICE.

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide service appropriate to the age of the patient.

a. Assists with collection of and documents clinical data. Interprets this data, recognizing changes in

patient status, and reports this information to appropriate resources (i.e. physician, nurse, supervisor,

etc.).

b. Utilizes a multi-disciplinary approach in implementing patient care.

c. Demonstrates appropriate use of general patient care equipment (e.g. defibrillator, NIBP, doppler,

etc.) and ensures the cleanliness, replacement, or repair of equipment as necessary.

d. Demonstrates advanced knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures involved in the

operation of the radiographic equipment used for cath procedures.

e. Demonstrates ability to perform computerized hemodynamic monitoring and recording.

f. Uses aseptic technique during procedures. Assists in monitoring infection control practices in the lab;

conducts infection control audits with I.C. Officers, as assigned.

g. Demonstrates ability to set-up and assist with diagnostic and interventional cath procedures. Assists

in coordinating the introduction of new technologies in the lab.

h. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide service appropriate to the age of the

patient for the following developmental stages, infant, child, adolescent, adult, and elderly.

i. Demonstrates advanced skills and knowledge to assist with cath lab medical emergencies.

j. Demonstrates cost-effective use of supplies and encourages this behavior in others.

k. Assumes responsibility in maintaining an appropriate inventory of assigned supplies or equipment.

2. PARTICIPATES IN QUALITY IMPROVEMENT (QI) ACTIVITIES.

a. Participates in data collection when indicated.

b. Identifies opportunities for process improvement.

c. Participates in problem resolution activities.

d. Changes practice behaviors, when indicated, as a result of QI data.

e. Participates in and assumes responsibility as assigned for equipment/procedural quality control activities.

f. Serves as unit QI representative as assigned.

g. Leads team action groups as assigned.

3. PARTICIPATES IN EDUCATION OF SELF AND OTHERS.

a. Utilizes staff development programs and educational resources to meet unit and/or individual objectives.

b. Identifies learning needs of self and others utilizing the staff development plan and then strategies with

preceptors and/or supervisor to achieve learning goals.

c. Demonstrates ongoing competence as described in the unit competency plan.

d. Actively shares clinical knowledge and participates in clinical training for staff, students, and medical staff

members. Develops and implements clinical inservice for other staff.

e. Reviews current literature and stays abreast of research related to invasive cardiology.

f. Functions as a preceptor following preceptorship guidelines.

g. Coordinates or participates in, when assigned, the educational efforts of staff with regard to introduction

of new technologies.

h. Serves as unit educator as assigned.

i. Fulfills mandatory hospital educational requirements

4. PROVIDES LEADERSHIP.

a. Follows hospital policies and procedures and assists with development of unit protocols/procedures.

b. Is familiar with and performs within job description and scope of practice.

c. Demonstrates appropriate interpersonal relations; works effectively with others inter- and

intra-departmentally in a team approach.

d. Attends and participates in unit staff meetings. Contributes to, and may develop when assigned, staff

meeting agendas.

e. Participates in development of department goals.

f. Participates in managing costs effectively and identifies opportunities for cost containment.

g. Ensures patient confidentiality and privacy and the provision of other patient rights.

h. Participates in hospital/unit committees as assigned.

i. Assumes charge role as assigned.

j. Demonstrates flexibility in scheduling to meet unit needs.

k. Assists supervisor with scheduling, collection of administrative statistics, cost accounting, procedure

coding, or other special assignments.

5. DEMONSTRATES SUPPORT OF RESEARCH.

a. Demonstrates support of research activities through active participation in the collection of data for

identified research projects.

b. Assist with coordination of research activities as assigned.

6. DEMONSTRATES ACCEPTABLE LEVEL OF SERVICE EXCELLENCE BEHAVIORS.

a. Integrates CQI processes into day-to-day functions by accepting responsibility for the quality of individual

job performance.

b. Seeks opportunities to continuously improve the delivery of services provided to VMC patients, guest,

employees, and physicians by making suggestions/recommendations through management, Direct Line,

department meetings or other forums.

c. Performs as a team member by generating ideas, respecting the opinions and contributions of the team

and supporting the teams recommendations and suggestions.

7. DEMONSTRATES ACCEPTABLE LEVEL OF WORK HABITS/BEHAVIORS.

a. Adheres to work schedule and arrives to work on time.

b. Adheres to allotted time frames for breaks or meals.

c. Dresses appropriately for work area.

d. Keeps personal phone calls/visits to a minimum.

e. Avoids making false, malicious, abusive, or threatening statements to or about employees, management

or the organization.

f. Conducts non-work related conversations at appropriate time and place.

g. Maintains confidentiality.

h. Follows safe working procedures. Conducts safety audits with Safety Officers as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Associate degree in Radiologic Technology (RT-R) is required.

An additional year in special imaging (invasive) is preferred for RT-R graduates.

ARRT certification is required OR Associate degree in Cardiovascular Technology.

Three years of experience as a technician in a Cath Lab is required.

American Heart Association BLS certification is required.

Demonstration of an appropriate technical skill level in the Cath Lab.
