Job Description

Title: Optometry Technician

Job Summary: The Optometry Technician reports directly to the Optometrist and is responsible for pre-testing and special testing, Is responsible for processing patient's personal and exam information through the medical record system, help maintain the operation of the examination and pre-testing area and is directly responsible for providing quality internal and external customer service. The successful candidate will be self-motivated, organized, and detail-oriented, with an ability to multitask while working in a fast-paced environment. This position require teamwork, and provids a great opportunity to join a growing and successful organization.

Job Duties:
  1. Process patient's personal and exam information in the organization's electronic health record.
  2. Manage patient flow, and effectively communicate with team members and providers.
  3. Uncover and prepare exam equipment in the morning and turn off and cover equipment at the end of the day.
  4. Obtain and update patient's ocular, medical, and family histories and examination data.
  5. Check condition of patients' eyes by assessing pupils, intraocular pressure, binocular status, extra ocular muscle function, visual acuity, peripheral vision, color vision, and corneal pachymetry and blood pressure when indicated.
  6. Prepare patients for examination by dilating pupils; reporting patient history summary, changes in visual acuity, elevated extra ocular pressure, or blood pressure to Optometrist.
  7. Assist the Optometrist as may be required. Conduct pre-testing and special testing for the following equipment and instruments:


  • Pre-testing I - auto refraction, lensometry, and tonometry.
  • Pre-testing II - preliminary chief complaint and/or history of present illness, and ocular, medical, and family histories, visual acuities, set phoropter with auto-refractor values, color vision assessment, and eye drop instillation when indicated.
  • Special testing - visual fields, pachymetry, ocular photography.

  1. Secure patient information and confidence, by completing and safeguarding medical records; completing diagnostic and procedure coding; keep patient information confidential.
  2. Counsel patients by transmitting doctor's orders, reviewing medication use, and reviewing contact lenses instructions.


  1. Keep equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining supplies; performing preventive maintenance; and arranging for repairs.
  2. Serve and protect the Omni Family Health by adhering to professional standards, policies and procedures, and federal, state, and local requirements.
  3. Enhance clinic reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
  4. Clean equipment between patients, and disinfect all contact surfaces after contact with potentially infectious patients.
  5. Keep work area appearance, products, and equipment clean, attractive, and organized.
  6. Order supplies as needed.
  7. Cooperate and assist in training fellow Omni employees, and share information to promote high-quality patient care and optometry operations.
  8. Be able to relate to the public regardless of ethnic, religion, and economic status. Treat all patients with dignity and respect.
  9. Perform other duties as assigned.
  10. Promote and believe in the Omni Family Health mission statement.

Additional Functions and Responsibilities:
  1. HIPAA compliance - Responsible for being aware of, and complying with, all HIPAA regulations and requirements. Treats all patient information as confidential.
  2. Compliance - Ensures compliance with all local, state and federal regulations.
  3. Quality Assessment/Quality Improvement - Participate in QA/QI activities and contribute towards the overall performance improvement in the organization.
  4. Information Technology - Required to learn and use the EHR/EOHR (Electronic Ocular Health Records) system and its components, as required by the job functions and highlighted in the Policies and Procedures. These components include NextGen, Healthport, PMS, QSI and other electronic features, as they are developed and implemented, as applicable to work environment.
  5. All employees will participate in Patient Centered Health Home Model at Omni Family Health.


Qualifications, Education, and Experience

  1. Graduate from high school, or equivalent.
  2. Must have thorough education or training in the basics of medical terminology
  3. Must be bilingual in English/Spanis
  4. 2 years prior experience as Optometry Technician preferred
  5. Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  6. Flexibility/ability to work any open clinic hours.
  7. Ability and work and thrive in a fast-paced environment and adapt to shifting priorities.
  8. Attention to detail with the ability to prioritize and execute tasks efficiently.


Responsible To: Optometrist/ Medical Director

Classification: Full time, Non-exempt
