Provide students with appropriate learning activities and experiences in the academic subject area assigned to help students fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Enable students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in society. Provide instruction and coach students to develop skills and ability to excel in sport assigned. Contribute to education program as a whole and to growth of students involved in athletics.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or higher from a recognized, accredited college or university;
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate or eligible for a valid Texas teacher certificate appropriate for teaching assignment;
  • General knowledge of coaching techniques and strategies;
  • Knowledge of University Interscholastic League (UIL) rules and regulations;
  • Must be willing to obtain and maintain a current automated external defibrillator (AED) and CPR certificate.
Experience
  • A minimum of three years of coaching experience in a formal educational setting or participant experience at a post-secondary level in assigned sport.
  • Experience as a coach in more than one sport preferred.

Special Knowledge / Skills
  • Knowledge of academic subject assigned.
  • General knowledge of curriculum and instruction.
  • Ability to instruct and supervise student athletes.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • General knowledge of coaching techniques and procedures is preferred.
  • Knowledge of University Interscholastic League (UIL) rules is preferred. Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior.

Major Responsibilities and Duties

Instructional Strategies
  • Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill the requirements of district's curriculum program and show written evidence of preparation as required.
  • Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for differences in student learning styles.
  • Present subject matter according to guidelines established by Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
  • Conduct assessment of student learning styles and use results to plan instructional activities.
  • Work cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP).
  • Work with other members of staff to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods according to district requirements.
  • Manage and supervise athletic activities, contests, and practice sessions to promote individual growth in athletic skills, teamwork, and good sportsmanship.
  • Plan and supervise assignments of teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s).
  • Use technology to strengthen the teaching/learning process.
  • Use a variety of instructional techniques and media to meet the needs and improve the abilities of student-athletes in the sport assigned.
  • Manage and supervise athletic activities, contests, and practice sessions to promote individual growth in athletic skills, teamwork, and good sportsmanship.
  • Work with other members of school staff to plan and implement instructional goals and objectives to ensure the overall educational development of student-athletes.
Student Growth and Development
  • Help students analyze and improve study methods and habits.
  • Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
  • Accompany and supervise student athletes during athletic competitions in assigned sports on out-of-town trips.
  • Drive student athletes to sporting events.
  • Apply and enforce student discipline during athletic contests, practice sessions, and while on trips off school property in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
  • Instruct and advise students on NCAA regulations with regard to academic requirements for scholarships and recruiting practices.
  • Encourage, by example and through instruction, sportsmanlike conduct in all phases of athletic participation.
  • Establish performance criteria for competition and evaluate students' athletic abilities initially and on a regular basis.
  • Model performance criteria and physical movements required for successful student performance of sport.
  • Take all necessary precautions to protect student-athletes, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Work with the athletic director to schedule competitions and plan season activities including practices, special events, and tournaments.
  • Coordinate with the transportation department for travel arrangements to out-of-town events.
  • Ensure compliance with all UIL rules.
  • Monitor and enforce student eligibility criteria for extracurricular participation.
  • Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of coaching program and make changes based on findings.
Management and Organization
  • Create classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
  • Manage student behavior in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Assist in selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials.
  • Accompany and supervise student-athletes during athletic competitions in assigned sports both at home and on out-of-town trips.
  • Instruct and advise students on National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) regulations with regard to academic requirements for scholarships and recruiting practices.
  • Apply and enforce student discipline during athletic contests, practice sessions, and while on trips off school property in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
  • Encourage, by example and through instruction, sportsmanlike conduct in all phases of athletic participation.

Communication
  • Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
  • Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
Administration
  • Assist in the selection of equipment and instructional materials.
  • Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required.
  • Initiate and approve purchase orders and bids in accordance with budgetary limitations and district policies.
  • Oversee the process of cleaning, repairing, and storing all campus athletic equipment and maintain a current inventory of all equipment and fixed assets within the program.
  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.

Professional Growth and Development
  • Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
  • Keep informed of and comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
  • Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required.
  • Maintain a current inventory of all fixed assets within program.
  • Oversee process of cleaning, repairing, and storing all campus athletic equipment.
  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
  • Responsible for properly maintaining district records, adhering to all policies set forth by the district for records maintenance and learning the records retention schedule for department records.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities

Assign and oversee the completion of work of assistant coaches, student athletic assistants, and/or teacher's aide(s).

Salary

The salary for the above position will be based on the salary schedule currently in effect by Board Policy and Administrative Regulations. Coaching Stipend(s) included.
