Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION:

Registration as either a Provisional Licensed Professional Counselor or a Provisional Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist by the Louisiana Board of Licensed Professional Counselors.

NOTE:

Pursuant to Act 484 of the 2014 Legislative Session and effective May 1, 2015, Counselor Interns are now called "Provisional Licensed Professional Counselors" (PLPCs) and MFT Interns are now called "Provisional Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists" (PLMFTs).

Job Concepts

Close from a licensed behavioral health professional or higher-level manager or administrator.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

None.

LOCATION OF WORK:

May be used by all state agencies.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:

Differs from the Social Service Counselor job series by presence of recognition as a Licensed Professional Counselor-Intern or a Marriage and Family Therapy Intern by the Louisiana Licensed Professional Counselors Board of Examiners.

Differs from the Professional Counselor 2 by the absence of greater independence and more complex caseloads.

Examples of Work

Provide individual, group and family therapy, to a patient population of all age ranges, using evidenced based practice modalities. Maintain required clinical documentation on all assigned cases. Work within a multidisciplinary team inclusive of therapists, addiction counselors, peer support specialists, nurses, psychiatric providers, and ImHealthy, primary care to ensure patients receive the appropriate level of clinical services. Communicate with various referral sources, i.e., court systems, DCFS, probation, health care providers, to ensure care coordination. Attend clinical staff meetings as scheduled, individual supervision as needed, and participate in all required training.

Interview clients seeking Behavioral Health services (EBD, MH, AD, Dual Diagnosis), incorporating information from family and/or concerned significant others (CSO), to develop case histories. Assess counseling needs and identify the patient's strengths/vulnerabilities. Facilitate treatment planning. Provide clients and families/CSO with education regarding Behavioral Health Illnesses. Conduct discharge planning assistance for transition back into independent or supportive community living. Identify areas of need and make appropriate referrals to ImCal programs and/or community agencies that best meet those needs.

Provide crisis intervention/assessment to clients who are suicidal, homicidal, gravely disabled, or otherwise high risk. This involves assessment of acute stabilization needs, collaboration with the psychiatric provider and the family/CSO, and linkage with supports and services, i.e., inpatient treatment facilities.
