Description:

JOB SUMMARY

Prepares diagnostic and therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals. Administers radiopharmaceuticals to patients after explaining procedure and obtaining complete patient history. Physically assists patients in assuming required imaging positions to ensure that complete diagnostic studies are obtained. Calibrates and operates thyroid uptake systems, Geiger counters, dose calibrators and other departmental equipment. Calibrates and operates computerized imaging systems, including SPECT, to image, process, and photograph patient studies. Develops film and reviews them with Radiologist. Follows departmental safety policies, including infection control and radiation safety.

The Nuclear Medicine Technologist position carries an Occupational Exposure Control Category I, meaning that it involves definite exposure to blood and body fluids. This job involves numerous vascular access procedures including drawing blood (Rest Muga's), re-injecting blood (GI Bleed Scan), setting I.V. lines (Stress Myocardial Scans), and intravenous injections (most radiopharmaceuticals).

PERFORMANCE DUTIES

* Obtains and documents patient history, explains procedure to patient and interacts as a liaison between patient and radiologist as necessary.
* Evaluates the patient for specific requirements due to age group and shows care and compassion for all patients.
* Reviews physician order/requisition prior to exam.
* Produces diagnostically acceptable films for radiologists' interpretation according to departmental procedures manual.
* Ensures proper patient ID and date are on all films.
* Acknowledges or modifies orders after completion of exams and documents date, number of films and tech initials on requisitions.
* Checks room preparedness before radiographic procedures are performed and stocks supplies as directed.
* Follows radiation safety precautions for self and patients as appropriate.
* Maintains radiographic equipment by proper handling and care and reports any equipment malfunction as directed by departmental policy and procedure
* Demonstrates respect for patients' rights and maintains confidentiality of patient information and records

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

* Graduate of a school of Nuclear Medicine Technology.
* A baccalaureate degree in Nuclear Medicine Technology is desirable.



Licensure:

Must be registered by one of the following registries: American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP), or the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB).

A registry eligible individual is assigned a somewhat lower status pending certification. Employee has 90 days in which to become registered.

Training and Experience:

* Must fulfill education requirements above.
* Prior experience in a busy hospital setting is highly desirable.
* Experience with SPECT is highly desirable.
* Experience with Nuclear Cardiology is highly desirable.

Job Knowledge:

* Must be familiar with and able to compound radiopharmaceuticals, calculate and prepare patient doses, and administer doses intravenously.
* Must be familiar with and able to effectively use Nuclear Medicine equipment including computerized gamma cameras, dose calibrators, Geiger counters, ionization chambers, and thyroid uptake problems.
* Must have working knowledge of anatomy, understand the principles of nuclear physics.
* Must be familiar with Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulations as they pertain to daily work.
