General Summary:

The Trauma Registrar is responsible for maintaining and updating the trauma registry in accordance with the requirements of the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma.

General Requirements:

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

1) Maintains the Trauma Registry database by coding and abstracting patient data according to guidelines for trauma inclusion set forth by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the POH Trauma program.

2) Confers with Coding Quality Analyst to ensure accurate ICD-9 and AIS injury coding as well as DRG for all trauma patients meeting criteria for inclusion in the Trauma Registry.

3) Analyzes and audits all data for quality assurance trauma standards and trends as stipulated by the ACS and requested by the Trauma Program Manager and Trauma Medical Director.

4) Expands the trauma database and programs as necessary to meet the needs of the trauma program.

5) Facilitates conversion of Trauma Registry data to several alternate computer applications for use in local, state and national studies.

6) Participates in state trauma registry committees and councils to meet TQIP and ACS requirements.

7) Collaborates with internal departments that maintain patient database systems to improve the accuracy of documentation.

8) Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by participants in statewide trauma registrar organizations and attending education offerings.

9) Interacts with software support staff to ensure Trauma One system viability, resolutions of problems and maintaining software updates.

10) Enters trauma fees into Paragon finance to insure only those eligible for charges are charged.

11) Demonstrates knowledge of ACS, AOA, CMS and other regulatory body requirements with regard to corporate compliance.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1) Minimum Education: Associates Degree in Health Information Technology or Management required.

2) Minimum Work Experience: One year experience in hospital coding required. One year trauma registry and AIS coding experience preferred.

3) Contact With Others: Extensive contact with department and hospital staff. Periodic contact with physicians; may also have periodic contact with patients and families.

4) Analytical Demands: Strong organizational and analytical skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills required. Knowledge of clinical and disease process as well as implication of diagnostic testing for accurate coding. Self-directed with ability to work under minimal supervision. Computer skills with ability to input data, create spreadsheets, and use database applications.

5) Certification, Licensure: RHIT, RHIA, CCS or CAISS.
