GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
Head Custodian
Under limited supervision, performs a variety of manual activities cleaning and maintaining buildings and functions as a head custodian for a small number of lower level custodial workers. Controls and performs routine maintenance to heating and air conditioning equipment on the work site. Reports to the school principal and/or other designated school administrator.
Bus Driver
Under general supervision, work performed, includes but is not limited to driving bus safely to destination and return; following school district procedures when driving assigned bus routes; and monitoring students' behavior while they are riding on the bus.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Head Custodian
* Assigns tasks to other custodians.
* Demonstrates work procedures.
* Observes work of lower level custodians and identifies any needed improvement.
* Tends heating and air conditioning equipment.
* Cleans and makes minor repairs and adjustments to heating and air conditioning equipment.
* Moves equipment and supplies as directed.
* Makes minor repairs to furniture or facilities.
* Reports to supervisor damages or needed repairs requiring outside attention.
* Washes windows, woodwork, walls and other surfaces.
* Cleans and polishes floors.
* Replaces light bulbs and florescent tubes.
* Empties wastebaskets and other trash receptacles.
* Locks and unlocks doors.
* Maintains adequate supplies and materials on site.
* Maintains records of work schedules and assignments.
* Reports outstanding or unsatisfactory work and behavior to supervisors.
ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Performs other related duties as assigned by the principal and/or other school administrator.
Bus Driver
Drives bus safely to destination and return. Conforms to traffic rules and regulations; makes vehicle pre-checks and records and reports malfunctions; follows school district regulations for handling vehicle breakdowns and accident incidents; and keeps the bus clean.
Follows school district procedures when driving assigned bus routes. Picks up and drops off students at designated times and bus stops; ensures students depart the bus at their usual stops; and determines that all students leave the bus at both ends of the route.
Monitor students' behavior while they are riding on the bus. Take suitable action to resolve incidents between/among students should such incidents occur and report inappropriate student behavior to school authorities as soon as possible.
Safety of Others. Considerable responsibility for the safe transportation of students.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Head Custodian
Must have a high school diploma or GED equivalent. Experience in custodial work and some experience in supervising other workers preferred.
Bus Driver
5 years of responsible driving experience. Completion of the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles Bus Driver Training Course. Must be able to pass the required DOT Physical examination and have a DOT Drug Screen with negative results. Must be eligible to hold a Commercial Drivers License with Passenger Endorsement.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate vacuum cleaners, carpet shampooers, buffers, brooms, mops, small hand tools, etc. Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Must be able to perform work involving physical strength for extended periods of time. Physical demand requirements are for medium to heavy work.
Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving instructions, assignments or directions to subordinates.
Language Ability: Requires the ability to read simple forms. Requires the ability to prepare time sheets and supply requisitions using prescribed format.
Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.
Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions.
Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.
Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using custodial equipment.
Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as custodial equipment. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under minimal to moderate levels of stress.
Other: Valid NC driver's license and school bus driver's license.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Head Custodian
Considerable knowledge of the standard methods, materials and equipment employed in custodial work.
Considerable knowledge of safety precautions and warning signals regarding school building equipment.
Considerable knowledge of the proper procedures for handling hazardous wastes and hazardous substances.
Considerable knowledge of cleaning procedures and the use of cleaning materials.
Ability to follow a written schedule.
Ability to perform medium to heavy physical work.
Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in completing assignments.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
Working knowledge of procedures to operate heating and air conditioning equipment.
Skill in the use of small equipment used in routine cleaning.
Ability to work with other people, including making assignments.
Ability to understand and follow simple oral or written directions.
Ability to keep simple records.
Bus Driver
Knowledge of driving laws and regulations
Knowledge of safe bus operations
Knowledge of vehicle pre-run checks and their performance
Maintain records of names and addresses of students, locations and times of stops, route information, and time sheets
Administrative skills to implement established policies and procedures regarding student transportation, enforcing rules of student conduct and discipline
Communication skills in dealing with students daily; communicating with parents regarding bus routes and discipline problems; and advising the transportation department of bus malfunctions
Leadership skills to maintain discipline on the bus
Manual skills to maintain bus cleanliness
Mechanical skills to detect bus malfunction
Planning skills to develop student seating arrangements
Common arithmetical function to count the number of students on the bus and to complete time
