Job Summary

Adult Psychiatry Ascension Mental Health Clinic. Day Shift. The Chemical Dependency Counsel evaluates alcohol and drug use screening tools (AUDIT-C and SBIRT) to determine appropriate level of care and referral options, completes SBIRT screens, implements brief interventions, educates Patients on health risks related to substance use, conducts consults upon request. Substance Use Specialist serves as liaison between medical staff, social services, Patients, and relatives by maintaining updated referral information about community resources regarding substance use and providing appropriate referrals to meet specific needs of each Patient. Documents interventions and referral recommendation in Patient record. Completes monthly SBIRT report for Trauma Department. Maintains medical records of AUDIT-C and SBIRT Reports. Relies on education, experience, and judgment to accomplish job. Works under general supervision. Creativity, insight, and coordination with other departments for placement options is expected to complete responsibilities.

Qualifications

Job Requirements
  • Minimum one year of substance use specific treatment, referral, and assessment skills
  • Master's Degree in Social or Behavioral Sciences OR Licensed Addiction Counselor certification (ADRA)
  • Substance Use Disorder Diagnosis (DSM V), Brief Intervention Techniques, Motivational Intervention and Interviewing Skills, SBIRT Training
  • Ability to assist Patients in developing awareness of substance use severity and willingness to follow through with recommendations that will reduce complications related to substance use. Ability to display compassion and understanding of emotional impact substance use has on Patient and Family. Specific knowledge related to referral sources and ability to identify appropriate resources to meet the individual needs of each patient
