About Second Harvest

Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida is a member of Feeding America - the largest charitable domestic hunger-relief organization in the United States. SHFBCF secures and distributes food and grocery products to approximately 700 local nonprofit feeding programs throughout Central Florida. Last year, with the help of food and financial donors, volunteers and a caring, committed community, the food bank has distributed enough food for 81 million meals to partner programs such as food pantries, soup kitchens, women's shelters, senior centers, day care centers and Kids Cafes. In addition, Second Harvest's 16-week culinary training program teaches foodservice-based technical, life and employability skills to economically hard-pressed adults. Hybrid work model (office/home/community), Monday-Friday, 8AM-5PM; some night and weekend requirements

Job Summary

Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida, alongside Feeding Florida and food banks from across the state, have received federal funding through the Department of Children and Families to launch SNAP-Education programming. SHFB will be administering SNAP-Ed programming regionally in 7 counties - Orange, Osceola, Seminole, Lake, Brevard, Volusia, and Marion. This brand new program will meaningfully change the landscape of nutrition and health promotion programming of the food bank system, and SHFB is looking for a team of Nutrition Education Coordinators to bring this work to life in our community.

The Nutrition Education Coordinator's role is to cultivate partnerships and implement innovative nutrition education programming that empowers the community with knowledge about the value of choosing healthy and nutritious foods. Committed to improving the lives of neighbors and building a healthier community, programs implemented by Nutrition Education Coordinators focus on increasing both the health and capability of neighbors in need, and the capacity of many critical community partners to deploy health and nutrition education strategies across the region.

Under the supervision of the Nutrition Education Manager, Nutrition Education Coordinators will provide localized nutrition and health education in a variety of community settings and environments. Following company and State-instituted policies and curriculum, Nutrition Education Coordinators will work to identify partners and opportunities to connect with neighbors in need and provide nutrition and health education relevant to the needs identified for their assigned Counties. Nutrition Education Coordinators will assist in the development of nutrition handouts, recipes, cooking demonstrations and videos, and other materials needed to reach targeted audiences. Nutrition Education Coordinators will be responsible for tracking and reporting required data and feedback from classes and other community interactions. They, alongside their manager and team, will continuously participate in program improvement and strategic planning.

Nutrition Education Coordinators will spend approximately 75% of their time in their designated service area (one county). However, they will be required to come to the Orlando office for team meetings and to access program materials and supplies. Additionally, they may be asked to travel to any of the 7 county service region to cover other areas if needed. Mileage will be reimbursed at the state of Florida rate.

Job Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with the Nutrition Education team and across food bank programs to identify sites to provide localized nutrition education programming across community
  • Facilitate nutrition education classes and/or cooking demonstrations with SNAP eligible populations at community events and partner sites, including locations such as food pantries, farmers markets, healthcare centers, senior living centers, schools, etc.
  • Assist in the identification, recruitment, and maintenance of possible Nutrition Education partners in the community, effectively communicating the SNAP-Ed goals and mission
  • Collaborate with the Health Promotion Coordinator team to identify sites for implementation of nutrition nudges, recipes, and other program materials that support policy, system and environmental (PSE) changes
  • Effectively utilize internal Pears database tracking programmatic outcomes for nutrition classes
  • Assist in the development of tasty, healthful and cost-effective recipes suitable for use in nutrition programs and distribution to food pantries and kitchens
  • Assist other staff on special projects
  • Commit to upholding policies, principles and best practices for food safety
  • Complete all required DCF training and any other required professional development training, including but not limited to topics around culturally responsive nutrition education approaches and trauma informed care

Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, Education and Experience Required
  • High School Diploma or equivalent, and at least 2 years relevant experience in teaching nutrition in community settings
  • You must live within 40 miles of our facility in Ocala, Florida to be considered for this position
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Demonstrated experience working in community settings with low-income, culturally diverse populations in socioeconomic crisis, to include children, families, adults and seniors
  • A basic understanding of the challenges and barriers faced when individuals and families seek assistance for food.
  • Demonstrated experience building and maintaining relationships with community partners
  • Demonstrated experience and skills with public speaking, including giving group presentations and training workshops with diverse audiences.
  • Experience collecting and recording accurate programmatic data
  • Ability to work constructively with individuals (staff, the public, and volunteers) from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds in culturally diverse work environments.
  • Demonstrated skills with Microsoft Word Office Suite of applications.
  • Ability to manage your time wisely
  • Reliable transportation and the ability to travel within Marion County and occasionally to any of the seven counties in our service area including: Orange, Osceola, Lake, Seminole, Volusia, Brevard, and Marion County
  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds

Desired Skills and/or Certifications
  • Associates or higher degree in Social Work, Psychology, Nutrition, Education, Public Health or related field
  • Accredited Certifications for Health and Nutrition (Example: NASM - Certified Nutrition Coach)
  • Bilingual, either Spanish or Creole
  • Experience in hunger-relief advocacy or social justice
  • Personal or lived experience with food insecurity or poverty
