Purpose: The Boiler and Equipment Mechanic performs preventive maintenance and repair of electrically-powered, gasoline, diesel-powered grounds keeping equipment and machines, small hand and power tools or equipment. In charge of maintenance - repair - cleaning - inspection and general upkeep of the boiler systems and attached accessories. The

Mechanic keeps maintenance records on preventive maintenance services performed and repairs completed on all grounds equipment, machinery and boilers. This person has accountability for all associated equipment and machinery; maintains an inventory of parts and supplies for such machinery and equipment.

Qualifications:

* Education: A high school diploma or the equivalent plus specialized or technical training in the repair and maintenance of small and large sized gasoline and diesel engines is required.
* Experience: At least two years of experience with boiler maintenance and repair preferred and at least two years of experience in repairing gasoline and diesel-powered engines is preferred; experience repairing and maintaining two- and four-stroke engines, small diesel engines, hydraulics, and welding is preferred. A combination of experience in both areas preferred but not required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

* Requires the use of small hand and power tools. Requires the ability to lift and/or transport equipment and machinery weighing up to 50 pounds on a frequent basis and up to 100 pounds on an occasional basis; prolonged walking or standing, and frequent bending, stooping, and reaching on a daily basis. Requires a full range of physical motion in order to repair and test the operation of electrically-powered, Natural/Propane Gas fired and/or gasoline and diesel-powered equipment and machines. Employees in this job are designated as essential employees and must report to work as scheduled when District offices are closed due to severe weather.
* Must have a valid North Carolina motor vehicle operator's license. CDL Licensing preferred
* Scope of the position requires exposure to waste oil, greases, fuels, gases and use of chemical solvents and cleaners used in the repair and maintenance of equipment and engines.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

* Performs preventive maintenance of grounds equipment by following manufacturers' recommendations or using personal experience regarding tune-ups, lubrications, oil and filter changes, adjusting or changing belts and hoses, sharpening or replacing blades, on push mowers, riding mowers, tillers, tractors, and similar grounds equipment.
* Reduces the need for contract maintenance services of all boilers and other equipment by troubleshooting and repairing (within capabilities) a variety of equipment and problems.
* Ensures that grounds equipment requiring major maintenance services or repairs receive those services by

determining the extent of services or repairs required and arranging with other District or contract maintenance

shops for services or repairs beyond the capability to perform or that are too costly (i.e., time and money) for the

shop to perform.

* Promotes preventive maintenance as a strategy for maintaining boilers and grounds equipment by developing and recommending preventive maintenance programs and schedules.
* Maintains appropriate maintenance records by keeping records of all boiler preventive maintenance services performed and repairs completed.
* Maintains appropriate maintenance records by keeping records of all grounds equipment operating hours, preventive maintenance services performed and repairs completed.
* Repairs damaged grounds maintenance equipment by welding and/or cutting to mend broken, bent or loose items where close fit or tolerances are not critical. Keeps blades sharp and belts adjusted.
* Learn and understand a general knowledge of the care and operation of District boiler systems. Service and maintain all equipment associated with the boiler water loop distribution system, circulation pumps, motors, pressure relief valves and expansion tanks. Assist with semi-annual boiler systems inspections conducted by our insurance carrier. Conduct frequent inspections of all equipment to ensure safe and reliable operation of all boiler systems.
* Assist with monitoring all fuel systems associated with the boiler system. Natural gas, propane and fuel oil. Checking fuel levels and condition of fuel.
* Safely operates District vehicles while picking up or delivering parts and equipment by obeying applicable traffic laws and following operator instructions.
* Contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.
* Contributes to the overall success of the Maintenance Department by performing all other related duties as assigned.

Supervision:

* The Boiler and Equipment Mechanic is supervised by the Director of Facilities Management - Maintenance and generally exercises no supervision of others.

Work Environment

* The work area involves moderate discomfort and/or risk such as operating heavy machinery or dangerous equipment, or frequent exposure to hazardous materials. Alternatively, the work area may be subject to environmental discomfort such as poor ventilation. Loud noises, and/or extremes of heat or cold. The work often requires wearing protective gear that may be uncomfortable. The nature of the work environment may produce moderate levels of stress.
